The Art Department prepares women to understand and interpret the past and the present and contribute to the future of our visual arts heritage. As an integral element of the liberal arts tradition at College of Notre Dame of Maryland, the Art Department is a dynamic learning environment with a dual mission.

Here, creative ideas become objects of art, and art objects of historic significance are studied to discover our connection to their past and their creators' ideas. The art department provides an intellectual foundation that enables the student to discover her place in the continuum of artistic creation stretching back to humankind's earliest beginnings.

The curriculum methodically cultivates the skills and creative instincts that will ultimately empower her to contribute in a meaningful way to contemporary and ongoing artistic production. The conscientious melding of aesthetics and concepts prepares the student for both advanced scholarly endeavors and personal and professional artistic expression. Artistic exploration, experimentation, and analysis of art in the previous millennia all serve to inform and enrich the lifelong process of personal, creative and intellectual growth.

We have four concentrations that may be selected in the art major: Art History, Pre-Museum Studies, Photography/Graphic Design, and Studio. Secondary education certifciation and a minor in art are also available.

The Art History and Pre-Museum Studies concentrations prepare women to continue studies in this field at the graduate level, as well as enter the fields of arts administration, art consulting and museum practice.

The Photographic/Graphic Design concentration is a strong contemporary approach to prepare women for fine arts at the graduate level and in the professional computer oriented workplace.

The studio concentration teaches a rigorous approach to art making to build a foundation which can then be applied to voicing the students' creative instincts.
