Recognizing the Need
To address a critical healthcare need, College of Notre Dame established a distinctive School of Pharmacy in fall 2008. An aging population, increased medication use, sophisticated medication therapies, and the current pharmacist shortage have converged to create a healthcare crisis. If unaddressed, the shortage of pharmacists and pharmacy educators will significantly compromise the level and availability of high quality healthcare for our community. With eight to ten qualified applicants for every one opening in America’s pharmacy schools, there is a clear demand—nationally and regionally—for this new professional school.
Solution to the Crisis
The new School of Pharmacy demonstrates Notre Dame’s leadership in response to our region’s critical healthcare needs by establishing the nation’s first Doctor of Pharmacy program on a women’s college campus. Providing a distinctive focus on leadership development and women’s healthcare across the lifespan, the School of Pharmacy will educate pharmacists to be excellent clinicians, critical thinkers and competent, caring, ethical leaders and contributors in their community. The School of Pharmacy will prepare its graduates to practice as pharmacists in community-based, institutional, corporate, industrial, governmental and other specialized practice settings.
In fall 2009, the School of Pharmacy at College of Notre Dame welcomed its inaugural class of 70 students. This new generation of pharmacists, with the requisite leadership and clinical skills, will assume important roles in our changing healthcare system upon graduation. Led by founding dean Anne Lin, Pharm.D., the School of Pharmacy will employ 46 faculty and staff housed in a 39,000-square-foot facility. The School will attain full capacity of 280 students in 2012.
