About the Department
Our mathematics program helps students appreciate the power, beauty and scope of abstract thinking
We can help you discover the fundamental relationship between mathematics and other disciplines. Recognizing the importance of the computer as the mode of information communication in today's society, the department has incorporated knowledge of computer science into its program.
At Notre Dame, there are various ways to pursue the mathematics course of study. You can combine mathematics with any other major within the University. A mathematics major prepares you for a variety of careers in the industry, finance, engineering and computer science as well as teaching and graduate study.
Career-related internships provide students with valuable work experience and the chance to apply classroom learning to real life situations. Students have successfully completed internships at Westinghouse, City Hall and several local banks and corporations.

Laura told the Sun that being a math teacher is a dream come true.
"I really loved my math classes that I was in, so I chose to change my major to math," she said. "I'm really happy that I did, because math always came easy for me growing up, and I always would help my brother and my stepsister with their math homework."
"I think I always wanted to be a teacher and I don't know why," Potter said. "I enjoy helping people. One of my other career choices when I was little was a veterinarian."
