About the Program
Our program is focused on each student’s needs, talents and goals.
The department of music offers a comprehensive music minor within a liberal arts curriculum. We offer a fully comprehensive curriculum that integrates with most major programs.
The music minor:
- enhances an individual’s academic career through cultural experiences,
- hones the intellect through research, mental and physical skill development, and
- provides a “template” for aesthetic in life.
At Notre Dame, students are involved in all phases of musical pursuit: performance, research and aesthetic response.
Our internationally renowned faculty offers courses, instrumental and choral ensembles, and private lessons in voice and every instrument. Classes in theory range from fundamentals in music through techniques in orchestration. In history of music courses, students become acquainted with styles as old as chant and as new as electronic sounds and computer-generated techniques.
One medium of the student’s musical expression is participation in on- and off-campus recitals and concerts. The Concert Choir of the University has performed with the University of Virginia and the University of Delaware Men’s Choruses, as well as the Chorus of the Unites States Naval Academy. The Choir has toured Europe and the United States; it recently recorded a CD and appeared with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Since Baltimore is so close to Washington, D.C., and Annapolis, our students have many internship opportunities available to them. A few organizations that have hosted our students:
- John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
