Preparing for the Health Professions
Notre Dame offers programs of study for students who wish to attend medical, dental and veterinary schools, as well as schools of optometry, podiatry, and chiropractic medicine. Our undergraduate programs have a strong track record of preparing students for admission to top professional schools.
Notre Dame students choose from a variety of fascinating and rigorous science courses taught by faculty who are experts in their fields. Our Women’s College environment challenges and supports students to excel in the sciences, while our size and individualized approach to education encourage students to tailor their studies to their personal interests and goals. Our location is another plus—it offers access to premiere health care institutions, where our students find internships and careers.
Preparing for Professional Schools
Many students who are preparing for admission to medical, dental or veterinary schools choose biology or chemistry as majors. But any program that gives a broad training in the liberal arts and allows completion of the proper requirements in the physical and biological sciences is acceptable to professional schools.
"Pre-medical” tracks are available within the biology, chemistry and behavioral neuroscience majors. Students can find more information on those tracks by consulting the Notre Dame catalog and by contacting the Pre-Professional Advisor.
Notre Dame graduates have attended a diverse group of medical schools, including:
- University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
- Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine
- Drexel University College of Medicine
- Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
- New York Medical College
- Boston University School of Medicine
- University of Connecticut School of Medicine
- Harvard School of Dental Medicine
- University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine
- Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
- Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine
- Pennsylvania College of Optometry
Professional Program Requirements
Entrance requirements to medical professional schools vary, so students should consult the catalogs or websites of the schools to which they wish to apply to acquaint themselves with specific requirements and to keep abreast of any changes in admission requirements. However, almost all medical professional schools insist that applicants have certain courses that they feel will prepare the students for their curricula.
Medical schools would like their students to become “total physicians,” capable of understanding human needs as well as diagnosing disease, able to communicate and respond effectively and compassionately. The Notre Dame experience provides an excellent preparation for medical school, because our curriculum includes a wide range of humanities, behavioral and social science courses, and our extracurricular activities stress service to others.
Pre-Health Professions Advising
Pre-Professional Advisory Committee
Notre Dame has a Pre-Professional Advisory Committee whose members assist students with the application process for medical professional schools. The committee will also prepare a committee letter of recommendation for an applicant who has met the requirements for such a letter. Students who are considering careers in medicine should contact the coordinators very early in their studies to make sure they receive the information, mentoring and resources that will help them reach their goals.
