CONTENT:

The emphasis of this studio course will be to spend the week exploring and fabricating some of the materials and techniques used throughout history by the Old Masters of drawing and painting. In class we will make drawing and painting materials such as charcoal from wood twigs, metalpoint from silver and copper, ink from chimney soot, and oil paint from eggs. Time will then be given to experimenting with the materials in class.

No previous experience in drawing or painting is required.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

-To familiarize students with the methods of fabricating materials of drawing and painting from raw substances.

-Instruction of the utilization and manipulation of the materials fabricated.

-Provide an opportunity for students to utilize both material and techniques through the

creation of their own art works.

METHODS:

The studio will function as both workshop and creative studio space.

Instruction will be presented in the form of demonstrations and lecture presentations.

REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will fabricate the materials in the regular studio period and produce visual work in the classroom.

There will be no written tests.

Handouts of the recipes and procedures will be distributed in class.

Clothing suitable to studio activity
