The English Language Institute offers several options to improve your score on the TOEFL exam.
The Institutional TOEFL exam is used to evaluate your English proficiency, and some area colleges and universities will accept this score for admissions purposes.
Before taking the exam, contact the school you wish to attend to find out if the paper based test score from Notre Dame of Maryland University’s Institutional TOEFL exam is acceptable. If not, you are advised to take the Internet Based Test.
The ELI is a testing site for the Institutional TOEFL exam. This official, ETS Institutional TOEFL exam is offered five times a year on Saturdays.
Notre Dame’s Institutional TOEFL exam is a Paper Based Test. The test consists of three sections including:
- Listening Comprehension
- Structure and Written Expression
- Reading Comprehension
No essay is given, and no head phones are used. Whenever possible, the test is administered in the Language Lab.

TOEFL Prep Course
In each 8-week day session, we offer a TOEFL preparation course for high-intermediate to advanced levels of English proficiency. This day class helps prepare for both the Paper Based Test (PBT) and the Internet Based Test (IBT).
Placement testing at orientation determines which students are placed into the TOEFL preparation course.
Depending on interest and ability each session, we may run either a TOEFL preparation for more advanced levels or an intro to TOEFL course section for lower intermediate levels of English.
