February 7, 2013
Deborah Calhoun, associate professor and chair of the business department at Notre Dame of Maryland University, was honored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s with the 2013 Mission and Ministry Award.
Sister Mary Fitzgerald SSND announced Ms. Calhoun’s award at Notre Dame of Maryland University’s annual Notre Dame Day celebration: “This remarkable person creates a kinder, more just society by her dedication to the Notre Dame ideals, by her sincere encouragement and support of students and colleagues, by generosity of spirit, and by commitment to activities that promote a greater understanding and acceptance of persons.”
The award is presented annually to a lay member of the faculty or staff who exemplifies the spiritual values and educational vision of the SSNDs, who founded the University as a Catholic liberal arts college in 1895.
Sister Mary said of Ms. Calhoun: “Compassion and empathy are the outstanding characteristics of this year's recipient. She discharges her responsibilities faithfully and cheerfully, and creates an atmosphere of respect and engagement. With a warm interest in each person she encounters, she reflects the service ideals of the School Sisters and the core values articulated in the Notre Dame of Maryland Mission Statement.”
