Notre Dame of Maryland University Professor Wins National Poetry Honors

Notre Dame of Maryland University alumna and Sister Maura Eichner Professor of English Shelley Puhak has won the 2013 Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize. The prize, created in honor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Anthony Hecht,is awarded annually to a poet who has published no more than one book of poetry. Waywiser Press will publish Shelley’s second collection of poems, Guinevere in Baltimore, in November 2013, when she will read at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., alongside this year’s judge, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic. Professor Puhak also receives a $3,000 prize.
An assistant professor of English at Notre Dame, Shelley also holds the Sister Maura Eichner Endowed Chair in English. Her achievements are a testament to Notre Dame’s longstanding tradition of excellence in writing.
