President Mary Pat Seurkamp Named Among 2012’s Most Influential Marylanders
February 6, 2012
Mary Pat Seurkamp, Ph.D., president of Notre Dame of Maryland University, is being honored as one of the Most Influential Marylanders by The Daily Record, in recognition of her 15 years of outstanding leadership in Maryland higher education. Celebrating those who have made a truly significant impact in their fields, the award places Dr. Seurkamp among the region’s 50 most accomplished professionals in civic leadership, communications, education, finance, freestyle, health care, law, philanthropy, real estate and technology.
Notre Dame’s 11th president and the first permanent layperson to hold the position in the school’s 116 year history, Dr. Seurkamp has led the school through a period of tremendous growth and progress, beginning with a triumphant Legacy of Leadership campaign, the largest fundraising effort in the University’s history, which raised more than $34 million. During her tenure, President Seurkamp helped generate total support of nearly $75 million for facilities, academic programs and the school’s endowment.
Over the course of her 15 years at the University, President Seurkamp spearheaded the expansion of academic programs to meet the needs of non-traditional students through the College of Adult Undergraduate Studies. She successfully established Notre Dame as a leader in health care education, with the launch of the School of Pharmacy and expansion of nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. She realigned academic programs into the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and School of Nursing; established the Ph.D. in education, the first doctoral program to be offered at the University; undertook $120 million in much-needed capital projects involving the construction, expansion and renovation of residential and academic facilities; and led Notre Dame through the historic decision to become Notre Dame of Maryland University on September 9, 2011. In May 2011 she announced plans to retire at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year.
As a leader in the regional and national higher education field, Dr. Seurkamp is a member of several boards including the Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education at Boston College, SunTrust Bank Regional Advisory Board, Maryland Independent College and University Association, Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Scholarship Fund, Independent College Fund of Maryland, St. Joseph’s Medical Center Foundation Board and United Way of Central Maryland.
Dr. Seurkamp was selected by The Daily Record as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for 1998, 2001, and 2003 and chosen for the Circle of Excellence in 2003. She has been honored with the YWCA Outstanding Leader Award for Women in Education, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Distinguished Women’s Award, and the papal honor of Dame of the Order of St. Gregory.
