Teaching Interests

My passion is understanding risk in the greater context of financial data.  There is a certain amount of veneer/noise in most financial data that must be recognized and identified in order to understand the true picture of a business or investment, including the value of the data provided.  Sound business decision making must rely on accurate and reliable financial data, the crux of the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s (FASB) mission.  You cannot make good, sound decisions on financial data without having a certain level of reliability and understandability.  I endeavor to provide (you) my students with the tools and techniques necessary to, first understand financial data and second to recognize areas of risk in that data.  Whether you want to be a CPA that focuses on corporate auditing, a leader in a not-for-profit organization or a small business owner, you will find value and relevance in understanding and assessing financial data, including GAAP based financial statements.

Professional Activities Bio

I have 20 plus years of experience in auditing, financial reporting and financial risk management.  In addition to my past academic pursuits and faculty position, I currently practice public accounting as a partner in a small, specialized CPA firm providing audit, assurance and consulting services, both in Maryland and on a national basis. I began my professional career as a staff accountant in the telecommunications industry. After a few years, I procured my CPA license and joined US Airways as an Accountant in their corporate office in Arlington, VA, focusing on accounting for their aircraft fleet, associated debt financing and lease structures.  After completing my MBA, I began my career in public accounting at the firm of Arthur Andersen in the Washington, DC area.  Since then, I have worked as a manager or partner for the firms of Grant Thornton, Squar Milner and Moss Adams in their offices located in the Greater Los Angeles area, where I lived for nine years.
