Remembering NDM's oldest alum Back to Top

Sister Genevieve Kunkel ’32
January 3, 1911 – August 6, 2012

Genevieve Louise was the first of nine children born to Joseph and Dorothea (Becker) Kunkel of Baltimore. She delighted in being a member of this large family. Genevieve and several of her sisters attended the Institute of Notre Dame. In 1932, she graduated from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in English and history.

In 1932, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame from IND. As a candidate, she taught at St. Mary’s High School in Bryantown, Md. Later, she taught English, history, French and Spanish and moderated the debating and oratorical societies at Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School in Roxbury, Mass. She remembered her time there as being “young with the young.” During her 19 years at OLPH, Sister also attended Boston College, receiving a Master of Arts in English in 1940.

In 1961, she returned to the College of Notre Dame of Maryland as the director of sister education and supervisor of secondary schools for the Baltimore Province. In an interview given after she moved to Villa Assumpta, Sister Genevieve spoke of her love of helping the sisters, advising them as to future study and working to centralize the financing of sister education.

Sister Genevieve was a woman of spirit and optimism who remained active and vibrant in her 90s. Reading and music remained her greatest pleasures. She said, “I read everything that’s printed!”

Sister Genevieve died at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., on August 6, 2012, at the age of 101. She donated her body to medical research. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on September 29, 2012, in the chapel at Villa Assumpta. She is survived by two sisters, Irene Froehlich of Timonium, Md., and Maureen Storck of Macungie, Pa.; many nieces and nephews, and their families.


Groundbreaking for new academic building Back to Top

On September 12, Notre Dame of Maryland University will break ground on a major new academic building that will provide state-of-the-art clinical simulation labs for the new School of Nursing, needed space for the School of Education and a technology resource center to serve all NDMU students. The building will be located across from Knott Science Center and placed to help shape an academic green at the center of campus that will ultimately stretch from Gibbons Hall, built in 1873, to the library at the base of the hill.

The new building has been designed to provide for two distinct wings. The first wing to be built will house the School of Nursing and the technology resource center, which will provide a variety of workspaces and equipment for the use of undergraduate, graduate and professional students. There will also be some space for the School of Education, which currently lacks sufficient office and instructional rooms. The second wing will be constructed after the first is completed and will be the future home base of the School of Education.

Congratulations to Dr. Andrea Mathias ’91 who was recently appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley to be the chair of the Maryland Board of Physicians. Dr. Mathias now serves as deputy health officer in Worcester County, where she has earned the respect of clinicians and public health leaders across the state.

Are you interested in exploring Cuba? Back to Top

We are gauging the interest in a possible alumnae/alumni and guests trip to Cuba next spring. Let us know if you might be interested in this event as described below. Your feedback is important in helping us decide whether to pursue this special opportunity.

9 day trip including travel (Charter flights leave from Miami to Cuba in the morning, so an overnight in Miami may be necessary)
Dates: Late April or early May
Limit 16-20 passengers
Cost: Approximately $4,000 (the exact cost will not be determined until October)

This is a U.S. government approved people to people trip that provides an exclusive look at changes in socialist Cuban life and culture on this beautiful "Island of Forbidden Fruits." The trip includes lectures by University of Havana professors on U.S.-Cuban relations and on changes that have occurred since Fidel’s retirement, site visits to the University, a school, a family doctor, markets, museums, a cigar factory, colonial buildings, religious ceremonies (santeria) and cultural events as well as visits with artists and musicians. There will be a day trip to scenic, tobacco-growing Pinar del Rio and an overnight excursion to the Bay of Pigs and charming, colonial Trinidad. Accommodations will be at four-star hotels and most meals will be included.

Leonor Blum, professor emerita in the History/Political Science Department at Notre Dame of Maryland University, taught Latin American Studies and has travelled extensively on her own and with students throughout Latin America, including several student trips to Cuba.

Campus Common Read – The Cellist of Sarajevo Back to Top

All alums are invited to join the campus community in reading this highly acclaimed novel. We will welcome the author of The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway, to our campus, and following his discussion of his work, there will be opportunities for audience Q and A. We will conclude the evening with a live performance of the music referenced in the book. This program is supported by a grant from the Maryland Humanities Council. Donna Ringger Easton ’70

I am a Montrose Society member who supports the mission and long-term vision of the Society because it reflects my respect for the outstanding education I received at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland many years ago. I came to Notre Dame to study English and creative writing under the remarkable tutelage of Sister Maura Eichner. My high expectations were surpassed, not only by Sister Maura’s teaching but by that of the entire faculty at Notre Dame. The English department was a close-knit and highly challenging group of faculty and students. Every member raised the bar, and also supported the reach for everyone else.

Today, as a trustee and continuing supporter of our great Notre Dame of Maryland University, I understand the importance of giving back so that others can enjoy the same outstanding education I received. Becoming a member of the Montrose Society means a great deal to me and to my husband John. We thoughtfully considered how to best make a meaningful difference in the lives of future students, and determined that including Notre Dame in my will was the most lasting way to do that. So now, in addition to supporting the Annual Fund each year and the important capital campaigns that fund specific campus goals, we know we will be contributing to the University for years and years to come – a very good feeling indeed!

Why have you chosen to support NDMU with a legacy gift as a member of the Montrose Society?

My broader education at Notre Dame gave me the skills in critical thinking, social consciousness, and communication that formed the base for my professional and personal success long after graduation. I know that I would not be the person I am today without the skills, encouragement and confidence I found in my undergraduate years at this remarkable institution.
