Book Clubs Then and Now Back to Top

In tribute to their dedication to life-long reading, several Notre Dame alumnae book clubs were honored at the Loyola/Notre Dame Library with an exhibit, “Book Clubs: Then and Now.” One of our honored book clubs has been meeting continuously for over 40 years. Founded in 1969 by alums Mary Ellen Gunther ’54, Barbara Ipsaro C’78, and their friend Betty Lee Sweeney, their reading lists include an extensive collection of classics and best sellers. A second book club has been ably guided by former faculty member Jo Trueschler ’49. In the words of a former student:

“I cannot believe our good fortune in having Jo as our leader. She is so generous with her time: providing us with questions to ponder as we read, doing extensive research, and often bringing handouts and material relevant to the book at hand. What a treasure she is!”


Renaissance Institute Open House Back to Top

Holiday Bazaar and Santa’s Workshop Back to Top

Saturday, December 3 at 8:30 a.m., MBK Gymnasium

The Holiday Bazaar and Santa's Workshop, sponsored by the Weekend College Chapter of the Alumnae and Alumni Association, will be held on Saturday, December 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in MBK Gymnasium.

Over 40 vendors will be displaying unique hand-crafted gifts from jewelry, chocolates, soaps, gift baskets, stationery, holiday ornaments, children's items, candles, coffee and teas, hand-knits, and more! Admission and parking are free. A raffle and door prizes will also be included in the day’s festivities. Children are invited to enter Santa’s Workshop to create unique crafts, enjoy muffins and juice and share their wish lists with Santa.

The Weekend College Chapter has also commissioned Cat’s Meow Village pieces in a LIMITED series of the historical buildings on campus. All Cat’s Meow pieces that are still available will be on display at the Holiday Bazaar for you to purchase.

Please join Susan Reimer, Baltimore Sun columnist for her presentation "Not Exactly What I Had in Mind: One Woman’s Attempt to Combine Work and Family.” The dinner is $40 per person, $20 for School Sisters of Notre Dame or $15 for the program only beginning at 7 p.m. This event is hosted by the CE Chapter of the Alumnae and Alumni Association.

Education, Culture and Diversity in Europe: Munich, Salzburg and Vienna

University Day, September 9 Back to Top

Amid celebrations of its past, present and future, College of Notre Dame of Maryland became Notre Dame of Maryland University on September 9, 2011 – the 116th anniversary of the institution’s first day of classes in 1895. At University Day Mass, hundreds of students, faculty, staff, graduates, SSNDs and friends filled LeClerc Auditorium as Cardinal William Keeler presided at the Mass, celebrated by Bishop Denis Madden and concelebrated by Reverend Robert Kennedy.

President Mary Pat Seurkamp led the Dedication Ceremony, with remarks by Kathleen Cornell, SSND ’69 and Patricia J. Mitchell ’69, chair of the Board of Trustees. Several generations of the Notre Dame community came together to celebrate the day’s events with a luncheon in the beautifully decorated MBK Gymnasium. The day was capped with a family-style picnic in the MBK Gymnasium, where students, faculty, staff, graduates and neighbors enjoyed food, music and games.

School of Pharmacy Dedication Back to Top

On September 22, Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy celebrated the dedication of G. Avery Bunting Hall. The newly completed 25,000 square foot facility brings the total campus space supporting pharmacy studies to 40,000 square feet. The building is dedicated to George Avery Bunting, a distinguished Maryland pharmacist, businessman and founder of Noxell Corporation, who shaped this community and family with his innovative spirit. His daughter, Mary Catherine Bunting, philanthropist, nurse practitioner, and social activist, named the building in his honor.

Bunting Hall, with LEED Silver certification and quality construction by The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, is overshadowed only by the quality of education received by the students who study in the classrooms and labs. The completion of this building project is the result of the commitment and passion of President Seurkamp, the Board of Trustees and the School’s faculty. Their goal is to provide an exemplary education by creating a model learning community dedicated to the transformation of societal health.

G. Avery Bunting Hall is a beautiful facility that represents the commitment, of all those who teach and are educated here to provide compassionate quality care to those whom they serve.


New Entrance Back to Top

The beautiful new campus entrance road was officially opened to traffic last month after a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the event. Noted architect Robert A.M. Stern and designer David Ashton created a beautiful welcoming entrance bringing visitors to the doors of Gibbons Hall, the first building erected on Notre Dame’s campus more than 116 years ago. Fashioned in granite, ironwork, and gold leaf lettering, the gateway is understated and elegant, a style befitting the oldest Catholic college for women in the U.S. and Baltimore’s newest University.

Thanks to all who attended Reunion 2011! We were excited to see so many graduates, friends and guests back on campus for Reunion 2011. With more than 400 attendees, we had a great crowd! It was an extraordinary weekend and celebrated the very best of Notre Dame with a crab feast, awards, memories, laughter, great food and dancing. Alumnae and Alumni Association Awards
The Alumnae Awards were acknowledged and presented on Saturday, September 24, during the Reunion Luncheon.
The 2011 recipients follow.

2011 Elizabeth P. Hoisington ’40 Distinguished Alunna Award: Patricia Knott Smyth ’51
In 1991, the Alumnae Association established the Distinguished Alumna Award to honor a graduate who has had outstanding achievements in career or community service. In 2008, the alumnae association dedicated this award to the memory of Brigadier General Elizabeth Hosington ’40.

In the sixty years since graduating from College of Notre Dame of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1951, Patricia Knott Smyth, the quintessential Notre Dame woman, has truly changed the world. As a homemaker, Pat identifies herself as a proud family woman and values her liberal arts education, which she used to encourage her eight children and many grandchildren to be actively involved in service to others.

Pat has shared her time and talent with us in so many ways over the years. She has been an energetic participant in alumnae affairs in a variety of leadership roles and has given dedicated service to Notre Dame as a trustee. With deep pride and gratitude, Notre Dame of Maryland awarded the President’s Medal to Pat in 1998 for her service to Notre Dame and the state of Maryland.

A tireless leader, Pat has chaired many boards in the Baltimore area. She is one of the founding board members of Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as the first chairwoman of the MedStar Health Board and its predecessor the Heliz-Medlantic Health System, and Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland. Pat has also served on the Board of the Good Samaritan Hospital Endowment Fund, the Education Institute and many other boards in the Baltimore community.

Continuing the legacy of her parents, Pat has served as a trustee of the Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Foundation and of the Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Scholarship Fund. Pat’s life long dedication to philanthropy has benefitted the entire Baltimore community. Her father, Henry J. Knott Sr., was the first lay trustee of College of Notre Dame of Maryland. The Marion Burke Knott Sports Complex is named for her mother; the Alice K. Burke Scholarship honors her grandmother; Doyle Hall is named to honor her grandparents; and her great-aunt was Mother Philemon Doyle, SSND. In addition, Knott Science Center honors Pat and her sisters. Today, Pat’s son, John Smyth, carries forward her legacy as a member of Notre Dame’s Board of Trustees.

Pat’s distinguished career and service to the community embody the spirit of a Notre Dame woman.

2011 Service to Society Award: Susan M. Love, MD ’70
The Service to Society Award was established to honor a graduate who best exemplifies the ideals of a Notre Dame education through the application of his or her education, initiative and humanity to socially useful ends in the community, the nation or the world.

Susan was a proud member of College of Notre Dame, class of 1970. Dr. Love received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York, completing her surgical training at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital. She founded the Faulkner Breast Center in Boston and the Revlon UCLA Breast Center in Los Angeles. She is also a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Susan Love is best known as a trusted guide to women worldwide through her books “Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book” and “Menopause and Hormone Book.”

In 1996, she retired from the active practice of surgery to dedicate her time to the urgent pursuit of ending breast cancer by identifying its cause and working to prevent it. As president of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, she oversees an active research program focused on that goal.

With a generous grant from the Avon Foundation for Women, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation launched the Army of Women campaign in October 2008. The campaign is recruiting 1 million women and men who are willing to consider participating in research to find the cause and prevention of breast cancer.

Her reputation as an activist comes from her role as one of the “founding mothers” of the breast cancer advocacy movement in the early 1990s, as a co-founder of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC). She continues this work by serving on the boards of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and Young Survival Coalition. She also served on the National Cancer Advisory Board from 1998–2004 as an appointee of President Clinton.

2011 Regina Russo Hammel ’41 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award: Pamela Walters ’01, M’03
The Regina Russo Hammel ’41 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award given to a graduate who, within 10 years of graduation, has achieved excellence professionally or in service to others and has demonstrated great loyalty to the University.

Pam graduated from College of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies/elementary education in 2001 and was part of the inaugural class of the Operation TEACH program, receiving her Masters of Arts in Leadership in Teaching in 2003. Pam is the principal at St. Clement Mary Hofbauer School in Rosedale. Prior to that, she was principal at Sacred Heart of Mary School in Graceland Park. There, she began the PRIDE program for children with learning disabilities for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Pam was also youngest principal for an Archdiocese school at Sacred Heart of Mary during the 2005-2006 school year.

Currently, as principal at St. Clement Mary Hofbauer and coordinator of the PRIDE-Plus program, Pam oversees the professional development school for the Archdiocese, training of teachers for new PRIDE programs and coordination of the program. Pam has attended and presented at numerous conferences, including national conferences on teaching methods for children with learning disabilities.

The Baltimore Sun highlighted the Collaborations project between Notre Dame students and art therapy classes at Penn-Mar Human Services in Maryland Line, lead by Katie Gutridge '95. The projects will be on display at Gormley Gallery beginning October 24, with an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on October 29.

Notre Dame of Maryland University graduate Joshua Parker M'10, an English/Language Arts teacher at Windsor Middle School, has been named Maryland’s 2012 Teacher of the Year.
