Notre Dame Announces New President Back to Top
In August, Notre Dame’s thirteenth president was announced: Joan Develin Coley, Ph.D., President emerita of McDaniel College.
Dr. Coley comes to Notre Dame with a long record of service and success at McDaniel College, where she began in 1973 as a professor of education, a field in which she is a noted expert on reading and reading disabilities. During her nearly four decades at McDaniel she served as a department chair, Dean of Graduate Affairs, Provost and President — the first to be appointed from McDaniel’s faculty ranks. During her presidency, from 2000 to 2010, Dr. Coley successfully transitioned what was then known as Western Maryland College through a comprehensive name change and repositioning, and led the most successful fundraising campaign in the College’s history, exceeding the goal and raising $77 million. Dr. Coley assumed her new role at Notre Dame on August 12. She will serve as President for one year while a search is conducted for the next permanent president of the institution. Her appointment follows the resignation of President James F. Conneely, who cited family reasons in submitting his resignation.
The Notre Dame Board of Trustees named the Honorable Kathleen O’Ferrall Friedman as chair of the Search Committee charged with identifying and selecting the next permanent President of Notre Dame. Judge Friedman is a member of the Notre Dame class of 1962, former Chair of the Board of Trustees and a retired judge of the Baltimore City Circuit Court.

- Touring the new buildings: G. Avery Bunting Hall, home to the School of Pharmacy; the new university academic building; the new Otenasek House of the Morrissy Honors Program, named for the legendary Dr. Mildred Otenasek ’36; and the newly acquired President’s Residence in Homeland.
- Celebrating a community Remembrance Mass with the SSNDs, followed by the Farewell Jazz Brunch, with live music by the Montebello Jazz Group.

CE Chapter Fall Event, Featuring Maryland Author Erika Robuck Back to Top
Join us on November 20 for a Jazz Age-themed literary evening with Maryland writer Erika Robuck! Ms. Robuck is the author of the historical novels Call Me Zelda, Hemingway’s Girl, Receive Me Falling and Fallen Beauty, forthcoming in spring 2014. On November 20, she will join us in Doyle Formal Lounge to read from her work, answer questions from the audience and sign copies of her books, which will be for sale that evening.
The evening is hosted by the Continuing Education Chapter of the Alumnae and Alumni Association, which hosts cultural events on campus that are open to the Notre Dame community and the public. Past speakers have included Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice McDermott, noted Baltimore Sun reporter Susan Reimer, and Notre Dame’s own Sr. Kathleen Feeley.

Oak Crest Gathering Back to Top
On Thursday, August 22, alums and friends of Notre Dame gathered at Oak Crest retirement community in Baltimore County for a delightful lunch with President Coley. The first group of Notre Dame graduates to meet Dr. Coley, the alums gave our new president a warm and spirited welcome as they shared memories and stories of their time at Notre Dame.

Alums, students, faculty and staff turned out on Saturday, August 24, to welcome new resident students to Notre Dame. Members of the Alumnae and Alumni Association — including President Missy Evans-Moreland ’84, Roxine Phillips W’96, Elizabeth Brescia M’12, and Toyah Nastanovich ’94 — warmly greeted first-year and transfer students and their families as they moved in to Doyle Hall. Latease Lashley ’01, M’06, received a 2013 Excellence Award from the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) for her work at Baltimore City Community College, where she is an adjunct professor. She was also recently received the Best Media Member award from the Fashion Awards Maryland, for her media coverage of the fashion industry in print, TV and broadcast.
Michelle Hoppe '97, M'01, founder of Noah's Ark Academic Tutoring, Inc., celebrated the 16th anniversary of offering tutoring services to students from a variety of educational backgrounds.
Donna-Dale Marcano C’94, associate professor of philosophy at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, was named director of the college’s Human Rights Program.

The Department of Business and Economics announces an exciting new course—Leadership in Action: Coached Leadership Practicum—for graduate students in our Leadership and Management and Nonprofit Management programs. We are actively recruiting professionals like you from the business community to volunteer as coaches to our best and brightest.
This new program strengthens and differentiates our distinguished graduate business programs by offering our students one-on-one coaching that will enable them to lead a project that supports or advances their workplace or community. In addition, it will enable you—as a trained coach—to benefit from professionally-designed and delivered coach training that can help you move your own career forward.
We are seeking coaches from a variety of backgrounds, and strongly believe that the experience will be life-changing for you as well as for our students.

The Alumnae Admissions Network (AAN) is re-launching this fall under the direction of Meridith Walsh ’10, assistant director for Women’s College admissions and coordinator of AAN. Meridith is looking forward to meeting new alums while also reconnecting with those who have so graciously assisted Notre Dame in the past, from visiting high school or college fairs to calling prospective students to sending a welcoming email. The formal kick-off of the AAN program will take place during Reunion Weekend, September 20 to 22.
Coming soon is an all-new AAN website! It will be a central location where you can share your contact information, stay up-to-date on admissions events and learn about volunteer opportunities that might be in your neck of the woods. First Impressions Committee Back to Top
Do you have professional experience and knowledge that could benefit a current Notre Dame undergraduate as she prepares to enter the workforce? Consider supporting the First Impressions program, which provides students in the Women's College with the skills — interview techniques, resume-writing, dining etiquette — to help them make a strong first impression.
This year’s program kicks off on October 17 with a personal brand-building workshop led by WBAL sports broadcaster Gerry Sandusky, known as The Voice of the Ravens. Other events planned for this year include the professional dress fashion show at Macy’s on November 25, a resume writing workshop on February 11, and the annual Etiquette Dinner on March 25.
The First Impressions Committee is made up of Notre Dame graduates, faculty and staff members who support the program in several ways:
- Reviewing resumes
- Conducting mock interviews
- Sharing internship opportunities at their places of work
- Serving on the committee and planning workshops and events
- Preparing and serving food at the Etiquette Dinner
- Suggesting professional association events for Notre Dame students to attend — and perhaps taking a student as a guest!

Host an International Student for Dinner Back to Top
Do you have an interest in world culture? Would you and your family like to meet a student from a different country? Consider hosting an international Notre Dame student at your home for dinner this fall.
Students come to Notre Dame from such far-flung locales as Germany, Brazil, China, Spain and Saudi Arabia. For these students, the transition to a new country can be difficult, especially when they’re also carrying heavy course loads. Sharing a meal with the family of a Notre Dame alum would provide an international student with a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic American culture and feel more at home in his or her new surroundings.

Otenasek House Wishlist Back to Top
The Morrissy Honors Program at Notre Dame is moving into a new home this fall! The Otenasek House opens for honors classes this semester, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Saturday, September 28, during Family Weekend. The honors program at NDMU is named in honor of Elizabeth Morrissy, Ph.D., a distinguished professor of history, political science and economics at our institution for 40 years. The new honors house will be dedicated as the Otenasek House of the Morrissy Honors Program — a fitting tribute to Dr. Mildred “Millie” Otenasek ’36, who passed away last November at the age of 98. Over the course of more than 80 years, Millie was a leader, teacher, benefactor and friend to us all at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
We have a wishlist of items we are still seeking in order to make this honors house a home for our Morrissy students. We are requesting donations for items ranging from a conference table and chairs for the seminar room to Gibson Island chairs for the front porch. Teachers and Tutors needed for College-bound Program for Latina Girls Back to Top
This September, Leonor Blum, Notre Dame Associate Professor Emerita of History and Political Science, is launching a college-preparatory program for low-income Latina high school students in the Baltimore area. The program will take place at the Esperanza Center, 430 S. Broadway, on Tuesdays and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. Emphasis will be placed on reading comprehension, English composition and vocabulary. There will also be sessions on SAT prep, resume writing, financing a college education and the college application and visit process.
We are currently looking for volunteers who can either teach the Tuesday group class or do individual or small-group tutoring on Thursdays. The commitment would be for one day a week, for a maximum of two hours. No knowledge of Spanish is required.

Renaissance Institute fall classes begin September 12 Back to Top
Registration is under way for the Renaissance Institute’s fall classes. RI is NDMU’s life-long learning program for men and women over the age of 50.
Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. There no tests or papers — just learning and the opportunity to enjoy the company of like-minded adults! Offerings range from the humanities and science to yoga, tai chi, chorus and art. Annual tuition is $385 for all the classes you wish to take — or try one semester for $200. Parking included.

Notre Dame Sweeps ACO Rankings Back to Top
Notre Dame of Maryland University was recognized three times by Affordable Colleges Online for our strong commitment to providing our students with a quality education and a high return on their investment. Affordable Colleges Online ranked the University on its “Roman Catholic Colleges with High Salaries for Graduates,” “Highest Return on Investment Colleges” and “Top Women’s Colleges with High Returns” lists.
- Tuition prices and the starting salaries of our graduates ranked Notre Dame 10th out of 17 four-year, not-for-profit colleges and universities included on the “Highest Return on Investment Colleges in Maryland” list.
- The high average starting salary of graduates also placed Notre Dame seventh out of the 36 Roman Catholic colleges considered for the “Roman Catholic Colleges with High Salaries for Graduates” list.
- Notre Dame ranked third among the women’s colleges ranked on the “Top Women’s Colleges with High Returns” list. The University’s high return on investment placed it above notable women’s colleges such as Smith College, Wellesley College and Bryn Mawr College.
Notre Dame’s high rankings with Affordable Colleges Online confirm the University’s promise to prepare women to become leaders who will transform the world. “We know return on investment and potential income are factors students weigh heavily when selecting the college that is right for them,” said Angela Baumler, Director of Admissions for the NDMU Women’s College. “We are excited to offer our students a highly valuable educational experience that will take them far when they enter the professional world.”

Spanish Language and Culture Program at Notre Dame Back to Top
Do you work with the Hispanic community at a parish, school, hospital or other pastoral setting? Would learning more about Spanish language and culture help you better serve this growing population? The Spanish Language and Culture program at Notre Dame focuses on conversational Spanish and Hispanic culture, with an emphasis on the history, culture and faith expressions of the diverse Latino population. Send Your Child to A Child’s Place This Fall: Spaces Available for Notre Dame’s Early Learning Program Back to Top
A Child’s Place, Notre Dame’s acclaimed international nursery school and kindergarten, serves 60 children, 3 through 6 years of age, from the U.S. as well as Asia, Africa, Europe and Central and South America. Conveniently located on Notre Dame’s North Baltimore campus, the preschool is licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and offers an MSDE-approved kindergarten program.
A Child’s Place operates Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Children must be 3 years old by September 1 to enter the nursery school/preschool program and 5 years old by September 1 to enroll in the kindergarten program. Click here for applications and additional information.
Notre Dame Common Read 2013: In the Time of the Butterflies Back to Top
Join the Notre Dame community for this year’s common read, In the Time of the Butterflies. In this historical novel, author Julia Alvarez, a native of the Dominican Republic, chronicles the courage, faith and martyrdom of the Mirabal sisters, las mariposas (the butterflies) and their sole surviving sister during the last days of the Trujillo dictatorship. From Publisher’s Weekly: “Alvarez has fictionalized their story in a narrative that starts slowly but builds to a gripping intensity. As the sisters' energetic fervor turns to anguish, Alvarez conveys their courage and their desperation, and the full import of their tragedy.”
Ms. Alvarez will visit campus on Wednesday, November 6, to discuss her work with the community. More details are forthcoming.
