On November 20, Notre Dame celebrated the dedication of the Counselman Atrium of the University Academic Building. The warm, light-filled space that welcomes students and visitors to the stunning new University Academic Building now bears the name of Catherine Roloson Counselman ’41. Catherine and her son and daughter were in attendance at the special ceremony, as were President Emerita Mary Pat Seurkamp, President Joan Coley and Reverend Bob Kennedy, Notre Dame’s chaplain emeritus, who blessed the space with holy water. Next time you’re on campus, stop in to see this beautiful space!

Join us in 2014 for Power Hour Plus, a series of networking events, just-for-fun activities and professional and personal development workshops. Events are open to Notre Dame alums and the general public and are offered in the evening and on weekends throughout the academic year.
Learn how to get the most out of LinkedIn at this workshop led by Colleen McKenna, principal of Intero Advisory, who has coached more than 3,000 professionals on utilizing LinkedIn to achieve their professional goals. She will share techniques for building a powerful profile, making meaningful connections and using your network to create new opportunities.
A wine and cheese networking reception will precede the workshop. Bring your laptop or tablet so you can follow along with the presentation.

Mark your calendars for Reunion 2014, taking place September 19–21! If you are a member of a celebrating class (those ending in 4 and 9), you should have received the colorful save-the-date postcard in your mailbox in early December.
As always, we have reserved room blocks at several area hotels for Reunion weekend. Information about participating hotels has just been posted at ndm.edu/reunion. Be sure to make your reservations early to take advantage of the special Notre Dame Reunion rate.
This year’s Reunion Committee has also been posted on our website. The committee will meet in January to begin Reunion planning in earnest. If you’re interested in making Reunion 2014 a wonderful one for your class, there’s still time to volunteer to serve on the committee, contact classmates, and brainstorm ideas for the weekend. Just before Thanksgiving, this year’s First Impressions students headed to Macy’s in Towson for the third annual professional dress fashion show. As our student models walked the runway in the latest fashions, Macy’s personal shopper Lynne Heritage shared tips and techniques for how to successfully dress for the office. In 2014, Lynne will work with every student who successfully completes the program to choose an outfit that can be worn to job interviews, internships, and other professional events. Several alums who volunteer with the First Impressions program attended as well, including Roxanne Miller W’99, Sallie Mullen ’68, and Connie Matsumoto W’94.
In December, alums gathered both near and far to celebrate the holidays. On December 9, a group of alums and friends met in Ocean City for the annual Eastern Shore luncheon, hosted as always by Mary Ellen Steiner Gunther ’54. On December 12, more than thirty alums and guests gathered at Mercy Ridge retirement community; President Coley gave everyone a warm welcome, and Sr. Sharon Slear, Dean of the School of Education, shared updates and news from her department.

The Baltimore Sun is now accepting applications for an annual paid summer internship that commemorates the work of Mary J. Corey ’85. Mary, who passed away earlier this year after a long battle with breast cancer, was a veteran reporter and editor who became the first woman to lead The Sun’s newsroom. Please spread the word and urge current students and recent alums pursuing journalism in graduate school to apply. Details and eligibility criteria can be found at the Mary J. Corey Journalism Internship page on the Baltimore Sun website.
Giving back/volunteer opportunities
Do you have professional experience and knowledge that could benefit a current Notre Dame undergraduate as she prepares to enter the workforce? The First Impressions program provides juniors in the College of Arts and Sciences with the skills to make a strong first impression. Alums can help by reviewing student resumes, conducting practice interviews, serving on the committee and attending events.
This year, forty students with a variety of majors were accepted into the program. The first event—a dynamic presentation on personal brand-building from WBAL sports broadcaster Gerry Sandusky—took place on October 17. Following that was a professional dress fashion show at Macy’s on November 25. Upcoming events include a resume writing workshop on February 11, an interview preparation workshop on February 24, and the annual Etiquette Dinner on March 25.

The Networking Committee of the Alumnae and Alumni Association is made up of Notre Dame graduates who work in higher education, law, public relations and other fields. The group plans professional development and just-for-fun events for Notre Dame alums, including the Power Hour Plus networking series, which has hosted two successful events so far this year: Make Your Move: Navigating Career Transition on October 12 and the New York Bus Trip on November 2. Additional events planned for this year include the LinkedIn workshop on January 16, a networking breakfast at the Center Club on March 13 with Gabrielle Dow, VP of Marketing for the Ravens, and a wine tasting at the President’s Residence on May 14; for more details, see the Power Hour Plus article in this issue of Tower Talk.

Notre Dame alums, faculty and staff responded warmly to our invitation to host international students for dinner. This inaugural session has been a great success. Gerry Gibault W’01 hosted Debby Wang from Taiwan on Thanksgiving and says they had a wonderful time. “I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to help Notre Dame and to be involved. It sounds corny, but I felt like I lived up to my Catholic faith in that I welcomed the stranger, fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, and provided respite and safety to the traveler. Thank you so very much for allowing me to open my home to Notre Dame.”
Joan Wisner-Carlson, director of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations at Notre Dame, hosted two students, Natsumi Tomita and Erika Olea Paredes. The students joined Joan’s family for Thanksgiving and shared dishes—tempura and lemon pie—from their home countries of Japan and Mexico. “Both young women shared details of their family celebrations with us, as well as how current events in their countries are shaping the experience of twentysomethings,” Joan said. “While our entire family has very much enjoyed their visits to our home, I particularly have appreciated the time together cooking, since both contributed dishes from their respective countries and their culinary insights!”

Montrose is a name that has had special significance at Notre Dame of Maryland for more than 150 years. It was the name of the original building on our beautiful campus — a building that is still in active use today as Noyes Alumnae House. GREAT NEWS! The American Taxpayer Relief Act has been extended for qualified 2013 charitable distributions. Donors aged 70 1/2 or older can make gifts to Notre Dame of Maryland University from their traditional and Roth IRAs without including the IRA withdrawals in their taxable income! Distributions must be made directly by the IRA trustee to Notre Dame of Maryland University by December 31 to qualify. Please consult with your tax advisor for details.
This January the annual Notre Dame service trip to Guatemala is led by professor emerita Leonor Blum and Dr. Anne Henderson. The two-week trip will include community service in San Lucas Toliman, and the students are taking with them useful and essential items to donate to the needy. Needed items include school supplies (not paper), clothing for children and adults (in small sizes, as the people in Guatemala are relatively small), toys, and medicines (prescription and non-prescription, especially for children), gloves, bandages, and other supplies for minor operations. Open to current students, faculty, staff, alums and spouses, the trip provides an exclusive look at everyday life and culture in transitioning, socialist Cuba. We will travel on a people-to-people license and enjoy presentations by University of Havana professors.
There will be a two-night trip to Cienfuegos; charming, colonial Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, and Santa Clara; a day trip to Las Terrazas, a model farming community in scenic, tobacco-growing Pinar del Rio Province; and a Hemingway day. You will learn about colonial, early 20th century, revolutionary, and present-day Cuba as you explore the streets of Old Havana, visit museums, schools, a hospital, food markets and a Santería ceremony.

Last summer, three Notre Dame students—Gabrielle Rehmeyer, Andreina Mijares-Cisneros and Amber Brehon—traveled to Swaziland, Africa, armed with a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace and several suitcases full of colorful yarn. They spent several weeks in Swaziland teaching women and girls in a community called Section 19 how to crochet scarves, bags and other items that they could sell to boost their income. The money helped these women buy food and medicine—and granted them a measure of independence.
The student group Lesbians and Friends, also known as LAF, is collecting donations of yarn to send to the women of Swaziland, as they go through yarn very quickly making the items that they sell to make money for their families. Yarn, especially colorful yarn, is more expensive and hard to come by within the country, but we can help! Yarn donations can be left in any of the clearly marked boxes throughout campus; any alums who wish to participate can contact Gabrielle Rehmeyer at email@example.com or Susan Barber at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Dr. Gary Thrift of Notre Dame's School of Education appeared on the Nov. 22 edition of State Circle, a public affairs program on Maryland Public Television, discussing the implementation of Common Core standards in public schools across the country. The episode will be available soon online on the State Circle website.
