Each week we’ll post on our website the names of alumnae and alumni who have registered for Reunion events, so you’ll be able to see which of your friends and former classmates will be in attendance! Among the highlights of Reunion weekend will be the Maryland Crab Feast, the Reunion Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, dinner and dancing at Saturday’s Evening Celebration and the Remembrance mass. New this year are Classes without Quizzes — alums are invited to sit in on Friday classes taught by some favorite Notre Dame professors — and the Farewell Jazz Brunch on Sunday, featuring live music from the Montebello Jazz Group. Those who haven’t been back to campus recently will be amazed by the beautiful new additions: the elegant marble entryway on North Charles Street that leads up the hill to Gibbons tower, the Otenasek House of the Morrissy Honors Program, G. Avery Bunting Hall and the newly acquired President’s Residence in Homeland.
Reunion weekend is the time to reconnect with friends, fellow graduates and other members of the Notre Dame community. After a successful debut at Reunion 2012, Dance to the Music will again take place on the Saturday night of Reunion weekend. There'll be dessert, drinks and lots of dancing to the sounds of New Monopoly, back by popular demand!
NDMU’s Power Hour Plus Networking Series Back to Top
In this dynamic job market, it’s important to stand out. To help Notre Dame graduates achieve career success, the Networking Committee of the Alumnae and Alumni Association has created Power Hour Plus — a series of networking events, just-for-fun activities and professional and personal development workshops conducted by engaging, knowledgeable speakers. Events are offered in the evening and on weekends throughout the academic year.
The first Power Hour Plus event of the 2013–2014 academic year will be Make Your Move: Navigating Career Transition, taking place on October 12. The workshop is designed for professionals looking for guidance on how to move their career to the next level, return to the workforce after some time away or retool for a new field. It will include a panel of career transition experts and a presentation on how to find work that fits perfectly by Nicholas Lore, noted career coach (he has been endorsed by former President Bill Clinton) and author of The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career and Now What? A Young Person’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect Career.

Back by Popular Demand: Notre Dame Bus Trip to New York Back to Top
New York, New York! The Networking Committee of the Alumnae and Alumni Association is hosting a day trip to the Big Apple for Notre Dame alums and friends on November 2. We’ll make the trip on a comfortable coach bus, and each alum can bring up two guests, 16 years of age or older. In the evening, all are invited to gather with New York-based Notre Dame alums for a reception with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are $60 and include breakfast and snacks on the coach, as well as a $5 donation to the Notre Dame Fund. Space is limited — register early!

Alums Kathleen O’Ferrall Friedman ’62 and Kirby Gaddy ’13 recently participated in the two-week Leadership Institute for Teens (LIFT) on Notre Dame’s campus. Eleven rising eighth- and ninth-grade girls from Mother Seton Academy in Baltimore are on campus from July 15 to 26 to learn about being strong leaders in their school, their homes and their communities — as well as about being future Notre Dame women — through classes, activities, field trips and recreation.
In May, Mary Jones Smith ’71 published a biography of former President Theodore Roosevelt called The Joy of Life that relates the story of his life and many accomplishments. It is available as an e-book from Amazon.com.
Jennifer Jasmine Arfaa ’00 was recently promoted to Chief Patient Experience Officer of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia.
Janet Fowler M’03 has been named principal of Margaret Brent Middle School in St. Mary’s County.

Eight years ago, Notre Dame published an alumnae and alumni directory — and this spring we started working on a new edition of the directory, to be published next year. The university is partnering with Publishing Concepts Inc. on the project. Directories will be available in spring 2014.

Host an International Student for Dinner Back to Top
Do you have an interest in world cultures? Would you and your family like to meet a student from a different country? Consider hosting an international Notre Dame student at your home for dinner this fall.
Students come to Notre Dame from such far-flung locales as Brazil, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. For these students, the transition to a new country can be difficult, especially when they’re carrying heavy course loads.
Sharing a meal with the family of a Notre Dame alum would provide an international student with a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic American culture and feel more at home in his or her new surroundings. First Impressions Committee Back to Top
Are you an experienced professional with expertise that might benefit a current NDMU undergraduate as she prepares to enter the workforce? Support the First Impressions program, which provides students with the skills — interview techniques, resume-writing skills, personal brand-building — to help them make a strong first impression.
The First Impressions committee, made up of Notre Dame alums, faculty and staff members, is busily planning for the 2013–2014 academic year, working to expand and refine the program so that it continues to meet the needs of our students. Alums can support this program in several ways:
• Review resumes
• Conduct mock interviews
• Share internship opportunities at your place of work
• Join the committee and help plan workshops and events
• Prepare and serve food at the annual Etiquette Dinner
• Suggest professional association events for Notre Dame students to attend — and perhaps take a student with you as your guest to such events!

School of Pharmacy Receives Full Accreditation Back to Top
In June, Notre Dame's School of Pharmacy was granted full accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the official accrediting body of pharmacy preparation programs at United States colleges and universities. As Dr. Conneely stated in his announcement, “This historic achievement for Notre Dame is a testament to the vision and pioneering leadership of Dean Anne Lin and her faculty, the vision of our Board of Trustees and the School Sisters of Notre Dame, our dedicated pharmacy students and the overwhelming support of the Baltimore community.” Click here for more information on our School of Pharmacy.
The Career and Student Success Center Announces New Name Back to Top
As an alum, you can take advantage of the free services provided by the Career and Student Success Center. Formerly known as the Academic & Career Enrichment Center (ACE), the Center recently inaugurated its new name to reflect continuing support of NDMU students, alumnae and alumni in their academic and career aspirations.
Offering a comprehensive suite of services and a professional staff committed to academic and professional success, the Career and Student Success Center addresses career development needs across the lifespan. The Center focuses on providing support and encouragement to students, alumnae and alumni as they negotiate the job market and search for internships. Career counseling, career assessments, job and internship search guidance are available. The Center connects NDMU students, graduates and alumnae/alumni with College Central Network (CCN), a free web-based tool, and the Baltimore Collegetown Network to enable easy online job and internship searches. Students and alumnae/alumni can connect with regional networks through the Center’s membership in the Maryland Career Consortium, an organization of fourteen area schools, and the Selected Liberal Arts Consortium,which is comprised of small liberal arts schools in Maryland and Virginia.
The Career and Student Success Center also provides free tutoring services to all students and graduates who are enrolled in an NDMU course. In collaboration with academic advisors, a workshop series is offered during the academic year with topics such as time management, research strategies, study skills and professionalism which all members of the campus community are invited to attend.

Campus Common Read Chosen Back to Top
This year’s Campus Common Read is In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. The 1994 historical novel tells the story of the Mirabal sisters, three of whom lost their lives during the brutal Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. As Sr. Chris de Vinne, Vice President of Academic Affairs, stated in her announcement, "The women’s faith, their belief in what is right, and their strength of character can weave close connections to our mission to transform the world."
Various events and programs centered on In the Time of the Butterflies will take place during the fall semester, giving the Notre Dame community opportunities to discuss the book and its historical context. This is the third year for the Common Read program; last year’s selection was The Cellist of Sarejevo, preceded by The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. More details about campus events will be forthcoming.

The new exhibition in Gormley Gallery is Looking Away, a group show curated by Associate Professor of Art Geoff Delanoy. It features work by Catherine Borg, Ricardo Contreras, William Knipscher, Kimberly Llerena, Marian Ochoa and Ginevra Shay. Looking Away is part of this year's Artscape Gallery Network, a series of exhibitions taking place around Baltimore before, during and after Artscape. The exhibition is up through July 27. NDMU Nursing Represented at Conferences and in Publications Back to Top
Nursing faculty, an MSN student and an MSN grad represented NDMU at the University of Maryland Institute for Educators Conference, “Moving Evidence to Action in Nursing Education,” held on April 19.
- Dr. Erica Brinkley, Assistant Professor of Education at NDMU, along with Dr. Elizabeth Galik presented Use of a Web Based Delirium Module to Increase Geriatric Nursing Assistants’ Knowledge, Self Efficacy, and Outcome Expectations in the Early Recognition and Reporting of Delirium in Nursing Home Residents.
- Johanna Romero de Slavy, M'12; Margaret McCormick, MSN, RN; Mary Cataletto, MD; and Dr. Mary Lashley presented their research on Using a Standardized Tool (SBAR) to Improve Communication between Healthcare Providers.
- Dr. Sabita Persaud and Sarah Klein-Harris (MSN candidate) presented I Hear and I Forget, I See and I Remember, I Do and I Understand, a study of experiential teaching and learning in the Advanced Pathophysiology for Nurse Educators course.
The School of Nursing (SON) was also well represented in Orlando, Florida, in June at the 34th annual gathering of the International Association of Human Caring. This year’s conference — Magic, Mystery, and Miracles: Embracing the Difference Caring Makes in Nursing Practice, Education, and Research — brought scholars, faculty, practitioners, administrators and students together for learning and sharing the latest in Caring Art and Caring Science. Presentations by SON faculty and staff included:
- In Sacred Acts and Human Needs: Foundations for a Caring Science Curriculum, Bethany Correlli, MSN, RN, described the plans for this fundamental nursing course.
- Calling the Hermeneutic Circle: Being and Longing with Pre-Nursing Students with Mary T. Packard, Ph.D., RN, and Jenna K. Forte, MS, was a phenomenological exploration of the fragile world of the NDMU pre-nursing student.
- Listening to the Cellist, the Dressmaker, and the Chef: Knowing Caring through Literature and other Arts, by Mary O'Connor, Ph.D., RN, FACHE, described the experiential knowing of caring in IDS-100 for the pre-nursing student.
- Dean Katie Cook, Ph.D., RN, CNE, offered a reflection of the many challenges faced personally and professionally as the School of Nursing grew and changed in Confessions of a Caring Convert: How my Faculty Led me Back to Myself.
In other Nursing news:
- Dr. Linda Diaconis completed the advanced Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator Training Certification led by Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress. The 4-day training was held in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
- Dr. Jane Balkam presented Breastfeeding: Developing and Maintaining a Milk Supply at the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, from April 17 to 20.
- Mary O’Connor’s article Communication: Essential strategies for success was published in the June 2013 issue of Journal of Nursing Association.
- Sabita Persaud's article is online on Faculty Commons: How Dr. Sabita Persaud Uses Social Media to Enable Authentic, Relevant Learning

Naomi Cross, a nurse in Notre Dame's RN to BSN program, was named to The Daily Record's 2013 VIP List, which honors professionals younger than 40 who have made great contributions to their field and to the greater Baltimore community.
Associate Professor of Nursing Sara Rosenthal reflects on her first visit to Johns Hopkins Hospital NICU in “Tiny Patients, Big Decisions,” which appeared in the summer issue of Johns Hopkins magazine.
Beginning next year, The Baltimore Sun will offer an annual paid summer internship named after Mary J. Corey ’85, a reporter, editor and national correspondent who became the first woman to lead The Sun's newsroom. Mary passed away this year from breast cancer.
School of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Anne Lin and newly minted pharmacist Amanda Bertele, Pharm.D. ’13, talked to The Daily Record about how Notre Dame is stepping up to meet regional health care needs.
