Remembering Sister Marie Vincent Brothers Back to Top
The Notre Dame community lost one of its most beloved members on June 8: Sister Marie Vincent Brothers SSND. Sr. Vincent provided artistic and design expertise to Notre Dame for more than 25 years, in partnership with her friend and creative collaborator, Sister Gerold Mobley.
A member of the St. Louis province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Sister Vincent taught art, English and business for 31 years at high schools in Missouri and California. When she was assigned to a high school in St. Louis, she and Sister Gerold began a 40-year collaboration in team-teaching, art and creative design.
Beginning her Notre Dame of Maryland experience under the leadership of Sister Kathleen Feeley, Sister Vincent taught art, served as a residence director in Meletia Hall and contributed her creative expertise along with Sister Gerold. They were affectionately known as “G & V” around campus. In 2008, Sister Vincent celebrated her Jubilee as a School Sister as well as 25 years as a valued member of the Notre Dame of Maryland community. In 2012, she was awarded the President's Medal for her long-standing service to the University.
Memorial services for Sr. Vincent were held in St. Louis and Baltimore, at Villa Assumpta, in June.

On May 25, Notre Dame celebrated a milestone Commencement, as the School of Pharmacy graduated its first class of doctors of pharmacy. The ceremony was also the first presided over by James F. Conneely, Ph.D., Notre Dame’s twelfth president. Award-winning journalist and author Kathleen Koch addressed the graduates and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Kirby Gaddy, Women’s College Class of 2013, spoke on behalf of graduates.
Four hundred and three graduates were awarded bachelor’s degrees at the ceremony, held at the Baltimore Convention Center. Three hundred fifty-six received master’s degrees, 11 received the Certificate of Advanced Study in Education (CASE), 4 were awarded doctoral degrees in education and 53 received their doctorates in pharmacy.

Countdown to Reunion 2013 Back to Top
The Reunion brochure has landed! Graduates of celebrating classes (those ending in 3 and 8) received the distinctive, colorful brochure in their mailboxes during the third week of June.
If it’s not your Reunion year, you’re still welcome to attend Reunion Weekend events, including the Maryland Crab Feast on Friday evening, the Reunion Luncheon, the Alumnae/Student soccer game and Dance to the Music, which follows the class dinners on Saturday evening.

Save the Date: New York City Bus Trip, November 2 Back to Top
Mark your calendars for the Notre Dame Bus Trip to New York! Hosted by the Networking Committee of the Alumnae and Alumni Association, the trip is open to Notre Dame alumnae and alumni and their guests. Attendees are free to spend the day as they choose — in the evening, all participants are invited to gather with Notre Dame alums who live in New York for a cocktail reception before boarding the bus home. Power Hour Plus 2013–2014 Back to Top
After a successful first year, the Networking Committee is putting the finishing touches on the 2013–2014 Power Hour Plus networking series. The keynote event for the fall will be a workshop on Saturday, October 12 for those experiencing career transitions — how to move your career to the next level, returning to the workforce after some time away, for instance, or retooling for a new field. The day will include a panel discussion, breakout sessions and a presentation by Nicholas Lore, noted career coach and author of The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career.

Chris Holdridge M’10, an English teacher at Kenwood High School, has published his first novel, a political thriller called Paradigm of Fear. The book, published by Etopia Press, is available as an ebook from Amazon and Barnes and Noble’s websites. Congratulations, Chris!
In early June, Sylvia Lawson, Ph.D., M’03, was named assistant superintendent of Charles County Public Schools. Lawson is a former Charles County Public Schools principal, vice principal and teacher; she moved to Calvert County Public Schools in 2007 and received the county’s 2011–2012 Principal of the Year award. “I am thrilled to have Dr. Lawson as a member of our leadership team,” said Kimberly Hill, superintendent of Charles County Public Schools. “She is an enthusiastic, student-centered leader who will have an immediate and positive impact on our school district.” Congratulations, Sylvia! As of July 1, Leslie Simmons ’94, M’97, is the new president of Carroll Hospital Center. She has had a fourteen-year career at the hospital, where she was most recently executive vice president and chief operating officer. Leslie, who earned both a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in management administration from Notre Dame, was recognized as one of the Daily Record’s Top 100 Women in 2012. Did you know that Notre Dame welcomes students from over 25 different countries who come to Baltimore to learn English? Would your family like to meet someone from a different culture? Consider hosting an international Notre Dame student at your home for dinner this fall.
Students come to Notre Dame from such far-away countries as Brazil, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. For these students, the transition to a new country, language and culture can be difficult and interactions with American families can help them feel more at home.
Sharing a meal with the family of a Notre Dame alum would provide an international student with an opportunity to experience authentic American culture and feel more at home in his or her new surroundings. First Impressions Committee Update Back to Top
Do you have experience and expertise that might benefit a current NDMU undergraduate as she prepares to enter the workforce? Consider supporting the First Impressions program, which provides students with soft skills — business dinner etiquette, knowledge of proper workplace attire, personal brand-building — to help them stand out in this dynamic job market.
The First Impressions committee, made up of Notre Dame alums, faculty and staff members, is busily planning for next year, seeking ways to expand and refine the program so that it continues to meet the needs of our students. There are various ways that alums can support this program:
• Review resumes
• Conduct mock interviews
• Share internship opportunities at your place of work
• Join the committee and help plan workshops and events
• Prepare and serve food at the annual Etiquette Dinner
• Suggest professional association events for Notre Dame students to attend — and perhaps taking a student with you as your guest to such events!

The Montrose Society: Create your Legacy Back to Top
What is the Montrose Society?
Montrose is a name that has had special significance at Notre Dame of Maryland for more than 150 years. It was the name of the original building on our beautiful campus — a building that is still in active use today as Noyes Alumnae House. For the Notre Dame community, the word “Montrose” has come to symbolize permanence, commitment and enduring value.
These same qualities inspire many graduates, friends and their families to invest in Notre Dame’s future through legacy giving. By doing so, they are invited to join the Montrose Society, an association that honors those whose foresight and generosity help strengthen and sustain the University. Sr. Therese Marie Dougherty Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award Back to Top
In April, Sr. Therese Marie Dougherty, professor of classical studies at Notre Dame, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual convention of Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honorary Society. Sr. Therese Marie has been a Notre Dame faculty member for more than 45 years, teaching courses in Greek, Latin, history and classical studies. For more than two decades she has directed institutes and seminars for Latin teachers throughout the country, both at Notre Dame and in Italy through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The lectures she hosts by distinguished scholars on topics in classics and the archeological tours of Greek and Roman sites she leads are open beyond the campus to the broader community. In summer 2014 she will lead a tour of Roman Britain. Congratulations, Sr. Therese!
NDMU Nursing Represented at Educators Conference Back to Top
Nursing faculty, an MSN student and an MSN grad beautifully represented NDMU at the University of Maryland Institute for Educators Conference, “Moving Evidence to Action in Nursing Education,” held on April 19. Participants included:
• Dr. Erica Brinkley, Assistant Professor of Education at NDMU, along with Dr. Elizabeth Galik presented Use of a Web Based Delirium Module to Increase Geriatric Nursing Assistants’ Knowledge, Self Efficacy, and Outcome Expectations in the Early Recognition and Reporting of Delirium in Nursing Home Residents.
• Johanna Romero de Slavy, M'12; Margaret McCormick, MSN, RN; Mary Cataletto, MD; and Dr. Mary Lashley presented their research on Using a Standardized Tool (SBAR) to Improve Communication between Healthcare Providers.
•Dr. Sabita Persaud and Sarah Klein-Harris (MSN candidate) presented I Hear and I Forget, I See and I Remember, I Do and I Understand, a study of experiential teaching and learning in the Advanced Pathophysiology for Nurse Educators course.
In other Nursing news, Dr. Linda Diaconis completed the advanced Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator Training Certification led by Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress. The 4-day training was held in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Dr. Jane Balkam presented Breastfeeding: Developing and Maintaining a Milk Supply at the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, from April 17 to 20.
