Short-term study abroad programs are carefully planned by faculty members with extensive travel experience and expertise. They can be taken for college credit or personal enrichment.

  • Most short-term academic experiences abroad satisfy the NDMU general education cross-cultural requirement.

2017 Short-Term Experiences Abroad

 Service-Learning Experiences with the SSNDs in West Palm Beach, Florida

Dates: March 19-25, 2017
Trip Leader: Sister Linda Stilling, SSND (lstilling@ndm.edu, 410-532-5306)

The participants in this educational service-learning experience will live with the SSND community in West Palm Beach, Florida and serve with them at St. Ann’s Place, a center and refuge for the homeless. 

St. Ann’s mission is to provide a comfortable, clean, safe place where clients receive services in a dignified and respectful manner, regardless of race, religion, or sex. Participants will also have the opportunity to work at Indiantown, FL with the SSNDs at KinDoo Center. 

The center works with the Guatemalan population in a family center teaching ESL and many other skills. A working knowledge of Spanish is helpful at this site.


Notre Dame Nursing in Haiti

Dates: Spring Break 2017; Fall 2017

Experience nursing as a practice of social justice in Jacmel, Haiti!  Students join colleagues from the Community Coalition for Haiti in caring for persons in a variety of community settings: primary care clinic, surgical center, Angel Wings children’s clinic, Mt. Fleurry School, and orphanages.

Participants will also learn and grow with nursing students from Universit√© Notre Dame d’Haiti.


International Education in Helsinki, Finland

Dates: April 15- 22, 2017

This experiential learning opportunity, designed for graduate students in education, explores Finland’s world renowned educational system through the University of Helsinki’s Eduvisit Program.

Travelers will visit schools and attend lectures from expert educational leaders on the characteristics and benefits of the country’s educational system. In addition, participants will explore Finland’s capital, Helsinki, with its cultural treasures, culinary delights, and architectural beauty. 

Pre-travel and post-travel classes will be held on NDMU’s campus.


Archaeological Tour of Greece

Dates: June 30-July 13, 2017
Trip Leaders: Sister Therese Marie Dougherty, SSND (tdougherty@ndm.edu, 410-532-5559) and Sister Theresa Lamy, SSND

Enjoy modern Greece as you explore its early history. Climb the Acropolis in Athens. Travel to Delphi, home of the oracle of Apollo; continue on to Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games; experience the acoustics of the theater at Epidaurus, the Corinthian canal, the breathtaking monasteries of Meteora. Then go on to the island of Crete to visit the famous Palace of Minos.
