Introducing Gabby Gator, NDMU's New Mascot
March 18, 2014
Notre Dame of Maryland University today unveiled a newly designed mascot with a fearless spirit in honor of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, who founded the school 119 years ago.
Gabby Gator, sporting a white Notre Dame T-shirt and royal blue shorts, was welcomed by cheering students and the Oriole Bird.
“We asked the designers to create a ‘fearless’ gator, one that represents toughness, spirit, and the never-give-up attitude of the School Sisters of Notre Dame,” said Director of Athletics Erin Foley. “We also wanted our Gator to be female, a tribute to our focus on empowerment of women as leaders.”
The gator has been the mascot of Notre Dame of Maryland since 1980. The new Gator design and name were chosen based on campus community feedback received via survey and on-site polling in November 2013.
