President Seurkamp, Faculty, Staff and Alumnae Offer Expertise and Insights at Women of the World Festival

February 20, 2012

A leader in educating and empowering women, Notre Dame of Maryland University is a proud sponsor of the nation’s first Women of the World Festival (WOW), Friday March 2 through Sunday, March 4 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Sympony Hall. Introduced to great acclaim in the United Kingdom in March, 2011 and presented for the first time in the United States by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, WOW is a three-day event for and about women featuring expert insight and lively discussion on subjects such as education, careers, motherhood, health, arts and culture.

The event brings together an impressive list of talented and influential women, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Senior Counselor Alice Hill, Senator Barbara Mikulski, and BSO Maestra Marin Alsop. Notre Dame faculty members, alumnae and staff will share their insights and experiences at the following WOW presentations:

  • President Mary Pat Seurkamp and Lorna Hanley M’06, “Girls’ Education: How are we doing?”
  • Former President Kathleen Feeley, SSND, ’50, “The Fabric of Faith in Our World”
  • Board of Trustees Chair PJ Mitchell ’69, “From Good to Great: When Women Drive the Bus”
  • Vice President for Enrollment Heidi Roller, “Education 2.0 – Get It Now”
  • English Language Institute Director Theresa Cannone M’03, “Cultural Kaleidoscope”
  • Renaissance Institute Director Diane Finlayson, “Pursuing Lifelong Learning and Intellectual Growth”
  • Psychology/Criminology Department Chair and Associate Professor Maria Mouratidis, “Wrestling With Combat”

  • Maria Fuster ’94, “Nurturing an Entrepreneurial Spirit”
  • La Vida Cooper ’03, Speed Networking

On Saturday, March 3, Notre Dame hosts the WOW Concert, a night of inspiring music, dance and spoken word with stories that celebrate the life, love and spirit of women. Mary Chapin Carpenter performs an intimate 'storytellers' set with vocal, guitars and piano. From folk to funk, drama to comedy, the showcase also features a host of artists including Rain Pryor, Maria Broom, Dance & Bmore, Baltimore City College Choir, Stoop Storytelling, Lea Gilmore and a Soulful Celebration.

Maestra Alsop was inspired to bring the WOW Festival to Baltimore after attending the inaugural event in London in March 2011. Last fall, Notre Dame played host to one of the WOW “Think-In” brainstorming events that brought together more than 400 women and men throughout the community to kick-start the planning process.
