Notre Dame of Maryland University’s G. Avery Bunting Hall Earns LEED-Silver Certification

Notre Dame of Maryland University’s G. Avery Bunting Hall has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) -Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, in recognition of the environment-friendly materials and systems in the building’s design and construction.  

Home to Notre Dame’s School of Pharmacy, Bunting Hall’s environmentally-sustainable design reflects the University’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community through environmental stewardship and social responsibility.  LEED-certified buildings provide healthier and safer indoor spaces for occupants, reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and leave a reduced carbon footprint. The campus will also realize lower operating costs, reduce the waste sent to landfills and conserve energy and water.

“Notre Dame’s pharmacy and nursing programs are centered on principles of wellness and prevention – and we believe in practicing what we teach,” said Dr. James F. Conneely, president of Notre Dame. “By adhering to LEED standards, we ensure a healthier learning environment and set the right example for our students.”

The 25,000 square foot Bunting Hall was designed by Melville Thomas Architects Inc. and built by Whiting Turner. During the rigorous certification process, a third-party LEED review team awarded points across five categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality. Environmentally sustainable features of G. Avery Bunting Hall include:

Physical Site:  Located adjacent to Notre Dame’s existing Knott Science Center to maximize efficiencies in systems and sited proximate to public transportation.  Landscaping materials and plants are native or compatible adaptive species.

Building materials: Regionally sourced materials, many recycled, with no or low volatile organic compounds (VOC) that emit less gas into environment. High performance building exterior, high efficiency windows designed to increase efficiency of HVAC system.

Internal: Forest Sustainability Council (FSC) certified wood fixtures, green guard certified furniture, high efficiency laboratory and light fixtures, motion censors to control classroom lights, piston operated eco-elevator, natural lighting and expansive window views.
