NDMU Announces COVID Plans for Spring Semester
NDMU continues to closely monitor the latest COVID-19 health and safety guidance from the CDC, as well as State and local partners, including on the ground metrics in Baltimore, Maryland, and across the country. We are closely tracking information regarding the recently identified COVID-19 Omicron variant. At this time, our high vaccination rate and continued compliance with safety protocols are our best resources for protecting our community.
As we begin the spring semester, all eligible students, faculty, and staff who will be learning, working, or living on the NDMU campus and/or all off-campus sites/locations will be required to get a COVID-19 booster shot by January 31, 2022. Individuals that are 100% remote will remain exempt from the University’s vaccine requirement.

NDMU Student Team Heads to National Ethics Bowl
Notre Dame of Maryland University’s Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl student team of seniors Raquel Pompey, Kylie Simonson, Kristina Pickering and Cecia Zavala Ramos is heading to the national competition for the first time after advancing to the semifinals in November's regional bowl held on campus. The students will compete against 35 top regional teams in the national bowl from February 26-27, 2022 at the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Conference (APPE) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Made up of first-time participants, the NDMU team explored the practical and professional ethics of a variety of cases involving contemporary issues, such as vaccine mandates, teaching critical race theory in schools, defunding the police, cryptocurrency, and DC statehood.
Biology Major Places Third in Research Competition
A Notre Dame of Maryland University biology student won third place for outstanding undergraduate research in the highly competitive J. Howard Brown Awards from the American Society for Microbiology’s Maryland Branch.
Janelle Sangalang ‘22 received honors for her independent research project that explores the effect of prophylactic antibiotic treatments on surgical site infection rates. NDMU Associate Professor Jennifer Kerr guided her work as Sangalang’s research mentor for the past three years. An aspiring doctor, Sangalang is also one of NDMU’s 2021-22 Sr. Alma Science Year Scholars, selected for a 15-month research internship with a Johns Hopkins School of Medicine scientist.

NDMU Publication Wins International Honors
A publication introducing Notre Dame of Maryland University’s new brand launch won an international 2021 NYX Marcom Award recognizing excellence in marketing and communications. The 2020 issue of Universitas, NDMU’s annual publication celebrating the University’s accomplishments and donors, received a Silver award in the annual report category from the International Awards Associate, which administers the annual NYX Marcom Awards. NDMU Education Scholar Selected for Fulbright Specialist Program
A Notre Dame of Maryland University education scholar and professor was selected for the highly competitive Fulbright Specialist Program, which connects professionals to host organizations from nearly 160 countries to advance innovative projects.
Dr. Molly Dunn, assistant professor in the NDMU School of Education, will serve as a Fulbright Specialist through 2025 and share her expertise as an educator, researcher, and education reform leader. Her experience teaching advanced courses in NDMU’s graduate education programs, coupled with her diverse research interests and work abroad, align with the program’s goal to build institutional connections and enhance the capacity of the host institutions. NDMU Grad Wins 2nd Place in Bilingual Educators Dissertation Awards
A Notre Dame of Maryland University graduate placed second in the 2022 Outstanding Dissertation Awards from the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) for her examination of how education policies impact English learners’ success.
Dr. Xiomara Rivera Pagán D‘21 will receive honors at a Feb. 9 awards luncheon at NABE’s 51st Annual International Conference, held in New York City by the only national organization devoted to representing bilingual learners and bilingual education professionals. Learn more about her dissertation.
NDMU Nursing Faculty Selected for Digital Academy
A Notre Dame of Maryland University nursing professor and a leading voice in public health nursing was selected to join the inaugural Digital Academy by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The highly competitive academy connected innovative nurse educators with Apple Distinguished Educators to sharpen their skills as digital content creators.
Dr. Sabita Persaud, associate professor in the NDMU School of Nursing, was one of 30 nursing faculty selected for AACN’s Digital Academy: Building the Essentials Tool Kit with Digital Innovation, which took place from Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, 2021, in Dallas, Texas. NDMU Basketball Wins Fourth Straight
The Notre Dame of Maryland basketball team held its second straight conference opponent scoreless for nearly an entire quarter of play in Saturday's 67-46 win over Cedar Crest. The Gators collect their fourth-consecutive victory and move to 7-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. NDMU is currently third in the CSAC standings. Read more about last weekend's victory.
In response to rising levels of the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19, the CSAC has made the decision to temporarily prohibit spectators at all athletic contests. This will remain in place through January 31, at which time the conference will review the policy.

Collaborative Mural Workshop
Saturday, February 5 | 1 - 4 p.m. | Fourier 203
All NDMU students are invited to join in creating a multimedia mural for the large column on the first floor of Fourier Hall. This workshop, facilitated by guest curator Quentin Gibeau, will include elements of collage and painting, and will draw on the themes of the exhibition "Laid Bare" at Gormley Gallery, which looks at the push and pull of apocalyptic times and utopian possibilities.

Zuzu Acrobats

The Zuzu Acrobats are a Tanzanian troupe who base their performances on 2000 years of history. They bring modern art, culture, and passion with them everywhere they go. Zuzu African Acrobats exhibit gravity defying stunts while simultaneously displaying the beauty of the Tanzanian culture of East Africa.
