BALTIMORE – A 2018 graduate and current adjunct faculty member for Notre Dame of Maryland University’s School of Pharmacy received a prestigious national award for her commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for Hispanic communities.

Dr. Mayrim Millan-Barea D’18 was named to the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) inaugural 40 Under 40 list, which spotlights individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, exemplary leadership, and profound contributions to the advancement of health equity. Dr. Millan-Barea was celebrated along with the other honorees at the NHMA and NHHF’s 30th Anniversary Celebration and Leadership Summit Gala in Washington, D.C. on April 13.

“Mayrim is truly an incredible practitioner and leader,” said Dr. Sherry Moore, assistant director of experiential education in the School of Pharmacy. “Her support to diverse and underprivileged communities is a testament to her empathy and leadership. When she was a student at NDMU, all of the faculty knew how special she was, as she brought academics, leadership, professionalism, and integrity to our program. Pharmacy school is very intense and challenging, but she was always cool, calm, and collected, providing a leader for other students to model after.”

Dr. Millan-Barea currently serves as the Assistant Director of Pharmacy Operations and Medication Use Systems at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she manages a staff of nearly 40 direct reports in a variety of areas. Her connection with Johns Hopkins began when she completed four rotations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital as a fourth-year pharmacy student at NDMU, and it continued after she was one of just two students accepted for Johns Hopkins’ two-year Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Millan-Barea served as the lead pharmacist for vaccine clinics at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church – Baltimore’s largest parish for Spanish-speaking immigrants. Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Millan-Barea has also presented a Curriculum Vitae Workshop to the Future Pharmacists of America student group at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and she returned to NDMU to deliver a presentation titled “Road to Residency and Post-Graduate Opportunities” to third-year pharmacy students.

In her current role at Johns Hopkins Bayview, Dr. Millan-Barea serves as a mentor for students as they progress through their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences. She additionally served as chair of the Pharmacy Technician committee for the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacy (MSHP), and she was a pharmacist liaison on MSHP’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

Dr. Millan-Barea was hired as an adjunct faculty member for the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Clinical and Administrative Sciences in October 2023. As a student, Dr. Millan-Barea was the president of NDMU’s American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) chapter, and she was presented with an APhA Student Leadership Award at the organization’s Annual Meeting and Exposition in 2017.
