As a high school senior, Rebecca Becraft wasn’t sure what college would look like for her. But one AP Psychology class changed everything.
“I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help de-stigmatize mental health,” Rebecca explained. Maximizing her time at Notre Dame, Rebecca added minors in English and Religious Studies to further expand her knowledge and love of reading.
Choosing Notre Dame was an easy decision for Rebecca. What truly drew Rebecca in was its tight-knit community, a unique history, and the abundance of opportunities and connections.
The sense of community became the foundation of her journey. “The most meaningful part of my academic journey has been the support I’ve received from professors who became mentors, to roommates and family who stood by me during both good times and challenges.”
Several professors left a lasting impact, going far beyond the classroom. Rebecca credits Dr. Nikeea Copeland Linder, Dr. Mari Rapela Heidt, Dr. William Davis, Dr. Kate Bossert, Dr. Jeana DelRosso, Dr. Jens Mueller, and Dr. Evelyn Spratt with shaping both her academic and personal growth. “Whether it was mentoring me as a TA (teaching assistant), offering career advice, or just letting me sit and chat in their offices, each helped me grow.”
One of the most defining experiences of Rebecca’s senior year was her internship at Kennedy Krieger’s Neurobehavioral Unit (KKI NBU). Secured through Notre Dame’s Practicum course and with the help of her professors. That experience not only shaped her professional path, but it also led to a job offer.
After graduation, Rebecca will begin working full-time at the NBU while preparing to apply to graduate programs in psychology. Her long-term dream is to earn a doctorate and provide therapy for children and young adults while continuing her mission to destigmatize mental health and expand access to care
As she reflects on her journey, Rebecca’s advice to future students is to “show up, get involved, take classes that excite you not just the ones that fulfill a credit. Build relationships. Try new things. Demand the respect you deserve. Be the role model you needed.”
