The Legacy Leaders are a large component of the student experience at Notre Dame of Maryland University.

While each position has its own functions and obligations, student leaders will need to possess the following skills to be successful in their respective roles:

Legacy Leader Positions

Engagement Coordinator (EC)

Reporting to the Office of Student Engagement and Community Programs, the EC is a hourly-based position responsible for implementing programs to enhance the student experience for all Notre Dame students with special attention to non-traditional, commuter, and online student populations while fostering an inclusive, engaging community.

Students interested in this position have an understanding that it requires day-to-day departmental duties as well as responsibilities during University orientations, Welcome Week, open houses, involvement fairs, and other University events.

Mentorship Coordinator (MC)

Reporting to Student Engagement & Community Programs, the Mentorship Coordinator (MC) is a stipend-based position responsible for enhancing a vibrant campus life and supporting the undergraduate Women's College student experience. The MC will assist the Director of Student Engagement & Community Programs with developing programming and mentorship initiatives for Women's College students, such as the Anchorage Program, within the Office of Student Engagement & Community Programs, working collaboratively with other various campus offices and programs.

Orientation Leader (OL)

Reporting to the Division of Student Life staff, the OL is a stipend-based position responsible for providing a welcoming, introductory experience for new NDMU students along with their visiting guests and families.

Students interested in this position must contribute to an inviting experience for students and both internal and external constituents through various duties and responsibilities during University orientations, Welcome Week, opening processes, open houses, involvement fairs, and other University events.

Peer Educator (PE)

Reporting to the Office of Accessibility and Health Promotion, Peer Educators have an important leadership role in creating and providing preventative education, health promotion and empowerment resources for NDMU students.

The University’s peer education program is a stipend-based position centered on the value that students hold the power to shift campus culture and create an inclusive, positive campus community free from sexual and gender based violence. Peer Educators present workshops to students on various issues including sexual assault awareness, rape culture, consent, healthy relationships and bystander intervention training.

The peer education program also promotes an understanding of and formats for health promotion topics. Through educational forums, Peer Educators lead education and discussion on topics surrounding mental health, suicide prevention, self-care/stress management, body positivity, LGBTQIA+, diversity and inclusivity, drug/alcohol/tobacco/vaping awareness, empathy, mindfulness and emotional intelligence.  Other timely topics and activities as well as the therapy dog  program are also opportunities to connect with fellow students and community members.

Presentations will occur during orientation, NDMU 100, residence hall programs and other campus events.

Peer Educators will be trained on the principles of prevention of interpersonal violence as well as university resources and policies in partnership with the University’s OVW CCRT, TurnAround, Inc., and MCASA.

Resident Advisor (RA)

Acting as a live-in, peer leader, the Resident Advisor (RA) is a stipend-based position that participates in rigorous training wherein students learn and uphold strong standards including first response/crisis management as well as act as a student resource and para-counselor.

Students wishing to apply for this position must have lived for at least a year on campus. 

Students interested in this position must have an understanding that their responsibilities include community orientation, community building through active and passive programming, university/residence hall policy enforcement, and administrative duties. RAs are also obligated to perform their duties during University breaks and closings.

Applicant Requirements

  • Applicants must be either a full-time rising sophomore, junior, or senior (Women’s College students) or completed at least one full year of coursework (Adult Undergraduate/Graduate students) at NDMU.
  • Adult Undergraduate/Graduate students are eligible for all Legacy Leader positions except for Resident Advisor (RA) and are also encouraged to apply for any vacant Graduate Assistant positions on campus.
  • Legacy Leader positions are open to both residential and commuter students who meet the general qualifications.
  • Applicant must be in good academic and judicial standing:
    • Last judicial issue must be beyond 1 academic year at time of application date with no outstanding sanctions.
    • Must have a Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and not currently on academic probation.
  • Any offered position is contingent on end of year academic AND judicial status with expectations to maintain good standing while in these Legacy Leader positions.

Note: By applying any of these positions, you are authorizing professional staff within the Division of Student Life (i.e., Accessibility & Health Promotion, Housing & Residence Life, Inclusion & Community Standards, and Student Engagement & Community Programs) to verify academic and judicial standing with appropriate University offices.

Additionally, if you have previously held a Legacy Leader position, you will not need to reapply for the 2022-23 academic year. Your supervisor will be in contact with you about the process.
