Biography
I blended herbal medicines in the sandbox as a child and spent my teen years wondering at the vast possibilities of using plants as medicines. As a young adult, I was told that it was good work, but it would never financially sustain me, and I was puzzled over the injustice of one of the oldest professions in the world being so undervalued. My life's work has been to make clinical herbal medicine a viable career path through integration into the conventional healthcare environment while retaining cultural relevance. As a practitioner, President of our national organization for clinical herbalists, global speaker, author, or Program Director of the first MS in Clinical Herbal Medicine program in the world my role has been to bring the field of contemporary herbal medicine into greater visibility, integrity, and relevant as a medical science and art in today's world. I have created new systems for the integration of herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare and coached graduate students to answer some of the impossible problems we must face before it can be as envisioned. I have brought non-profits into their current thriving state by inspiring board members, enticing donors, and catching the eye of the public with mission-driven programs and focus. As an academic, my style has always been to engage the student using active learning, innovative pedagogy, and real-world application and to lead the charge in best practices for online healthcare education.
