BALTIMORE, Md. – The Knott Science Center at Notre Dame of Maryland University is undergoing a $9 million renovation to create innovative instructional and collaborative spaces to enhance student learning and success in STEM. The NDMU community will join with state and local officials and supporters to celebrate the renovation on Sept. 8, 2022, at 10 a.m. under a tent outside the building.

Dr. James Fielder, Jr., secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and Maryland Senator Mary Washington (District 43) are expected to bring remarks at the celebration, and Baltimore City Comptroller Bill Henry and Baltimore Councilman Mark Conway (District 4) are expected to attend.

The renovation will create glass-walled classrooms and labs to display science in action, instructional spaces for student-faculty collaboration, specialized research labs, and flexible group learning spaces. Set to start in fall 2023, NDMU’s new master’s degree in physician assistant studies program will also have a new clinical procedures lab and faculty offices in the Knott Science Center. The enhancement to the instructional spaces supports the needs of 21st century STEM students and promotes a project-based, experiential approach to teaching and learning.

Part of the $45 million Go BeyoND: Campaign for NDMU, the renovation advances NDMU’s leadership in STEM and healthcare education. The University has a long history of championing STEM innovation and has produced graduates who excel at the highest levels in their professions. NDMU supports several innovative programs in STEM, including the Sister Alma Science Year, which places science majors in yearlong research internships with Johns Hopkins Medicine scientists. The program’s namesake, Sister Mary Alma McNicholas, who for her six decades of dedicated service to Notre Dame, inspired generations of women to explore their passion in STEM.

The newly renovated Knott Science Center is set to reopen in early 2023.
