English Department
The English program combines critical and creative reading, writing and text analysis designed to encourage lively and diverse class discussions. Grounded in a liberal arts tradition, the academically challenging curriculum focuses on female writers and social justice issues that impact women in addition to preparation for professions or advanced study.

Through chosen electives, you can also create an English major with a drama or creative writing track. The creative writing track includes courses in writing poetry, short fiction, playwriting and creative nonfiction.

What to Expect Studying at Notre Dame of Maryland University
Small classes, lectures and seminars assure personal attention and encourage interactive group discussions in a collaborative environment. Creative writers participate in interactive workshops and are encouraged to publish original writing.

"Getting a paper published in an academic journal was never something that I thought would be attainable, especially at 21 years old. However, the advice and support of NDMU's English Department allowed me to realize my writing potential, which led to this accomplishment! Despite the English Department being small, every professor has an immense number of outside connections that they are ecstatic to share with English majors." Lindsey’s paper, “Colonized Education in I, Rigoberta Menchu, An Indian Woman in Guatemala,” written in ENG223, will be published by Johns Hopkins in the Richard Macksey Journal.

Publishing Your Work
As a student in the English program at NDMU, you will have support and guidance from faculty in pursuing opportunities to publish your writing. Our students regularly publish their creative work in outside publications.
Damozel
You can also submit your work to Damozel, the NDMU English Department's annual creative literary magazine which features any form of creative writing, art, or photography from NDMU students and alum.
Supplemental Learning Experiences
The department chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, The International Honor Society in English, plans theatre excursions, lectures, literature readings and service projects.
