Curriculum

Required Courses

English majors who wish to complete a drama emphasis or minor take the following seven courses:

DRM 240 - Acting Techniques
DRM 245 - Directing Techniques
DRM 320 - Techniques in Theatre Practice
ENG 203 - Playwriting
ENG 220 - Introduction to Drama
ENG 318 - Modern and Contemporary Women Dramatists, or
ENG 320 - Influence and Experiment in Modern Drama
DRM 320 - Techniques in Theatre Practice (focus in stagecraft area)

Outcomes

Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to:

  1. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to analyze literary techniques.
  2. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to conduct research on literary topics.
  3. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to interpret literary theories and critical interpretations intelligently and skillfully.
  4. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to demonstrate knowledge of literary history, including:
  • British Literature
  • American Literature
  • World Literature
  1. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to use discipline-specific terminology to describe drama as a distinct literary form.
  2. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to analyze and evaluate selected works of dramatic literature as well as theatrical performances.
  3. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to write dramatic literature intended for performance.
  4. Graduates of the English program with a Drama Emphasis will be able to create live theater as actors, directors, and technical artists, including the ability to:
  • Perform unique characters using body and voice in monologues and scenes.
  • Direct scenes and short plays from concept through staging.
  • Design and execute stagecraft elements, such as set construction and scenic design, to realize production concepts.

Professional Workshop Opportunities

Our program collaborates frequently with Baltimore-area theaters, including recent acting and directing workshops with artists from the American Shakespeare Center, Center Stage, and Single Carrot Theater.
