School of Nursing Awarded $839,640 in Grants to Strengthen Maryland’s Nursing Workforce
Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU)’s School of Nursing was awarded three grants totaling $839,640 from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to address Maryland’s ongoing nursing shortage.
Most of the Nurse Support Program II (NSP II) funding will support the Cohen Scholars program, a statewide initiative that provides both academic and professional support to aspiring nurse educators. At NDMU, Cohen Scholars are enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program within the Leadership in Nursing Education concentration. Over the next four years, the School of Nursing will add five new Cohen Scholars each year, preparing them to take on essential faculty roles in academic and clinical settings across the state.
NDMU Receives $88.7K State Grant to Recruit Former Federal Workers for Accelerated Teacher Certification
The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) has awarded a $88,754 grant to Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) to increase educator diversity by recruiting displaced federal workers for NDMU’s accelerated 18-month teacher certification program.
Governor Wes Moore announced MHEC's $1 million in grants to 11 colleges and universities during a roundtable discussion between higher education leaders and displaced federal workers.
Doctor of Pharmacy Students Learn Healthcare Management in Dual Degree Program with Clarkson
Madison Heyman D‘25 arrived at Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) with a clear goal: to become a pharmacist. What she didn’t expect was how quickly her passion would grow beyond pharmacy. Driven by curiosity and ambition, Madison charted a new path and earned her master’s degree in Healthcare Data Analytics from Clarkson University while pursuing her Doctor of Pharmacy at NDMU.
This notable achievement is thanks to a partnership between NDMU and Clarckson University. Through this agreement, NDMU’s Doctor of Pharmacy students can enroll in one of three healthcare management master’s degree programs from Clarkson— Healthcare Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Clinical Leadership, or an MS in Healthcare Data Analytics. This partnership enables NDMU students to earn a master’s degree focused on the business of healthcare, while simultaneously completing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at NDMU.
Money.com Honors NDMU for Top-value Education Master’s Programs
For the second straight year, Money.com recognized Notre Dame of Maryland University’s graduate education programs as a top-value leader on its 2025 Best Grad Schools rankings, awarding NDMU with the highest possible score.
Notre Dame was the only Maryland university to appear in this year’s Best Education Master’s Programs for Your Money ranking, recognizing the top 32 programs from across the United States. NDMU was one of 12 institutions to receive a perfect 5-star rating. Only the colleges and universities ranked with four stars or higher appear on the Money.com list.

School of Education Associate Faculty Shares Research Initiative: Elevating Unheard Perspectives
Since June 2024, Stephanie Hastings, an Associate Faculty member within the School of Education, has been collaborating with the Center for Civics Education on a grant-funded initiative titled "Elevating Unheard Perspectives." This project aims to address the underrepresentation of rural and tribal community voices in civics education and to integrate best practices of civil discourse among underserved students in grades 6–8.
Hastings's primary responsibilities included the curation of primary sources and the development of multi-day lesson modules. These modules are specifically designed to foster an understanding of civil discourse topics pertinent to rural and tribal communities. A key aspect of this development involved ensuring cultural relevance, with topics derived directly from information gathered from these target groups.
Hastings contributed to a pilot program from January 2025 through May 2025 which focused on training educators in the effective utilization of these newly developed digital resources. The modules she created will be presented by her and a team of educators and scholars at the Center for Civics Education Summer Institute in Nevada in July, as part of the ongoing "Elevating Unheard Perspectives" initiative.

Atiera Abatemarco, Associate Professor at MUIH, Presented a Preview of her Research
Abatemarco's project "The Characteristics of Practicing Yoga Therapists in North America" research studied the yoga therapy workforce. She presented a preview of the study's findings related to the demographic, practice, employment and income characteristics of yoga therapists. Additionally, Abatemarco has also been selected as a RAND REACH Scholar. Her selection for this program recognizes her potential and commitment to advancing in the field of research. The Scholars program is an initiative designed to support educators and researchers in building additional research proficiency and expanding their research network.
