BALTIMORE, Md. – A Notre Dame of Maryland University professor whose thoughtful mentorship, intellectually rigorous teaching, and commitment to student success have made a lasting impact across the University was named the 2026-27 Mullan Distinguished Teacher, the University’s highest faculty award.

Dr. Angela Snyder, associate professor of education, was selected for the honor following nominations from 13 students who described her as “thoughtful, present, calm, unwavering” and praised her ability to create a learning environment where “intellectual risk-taking feels safe.” Students credited Dr. Snyder with fostering classrooms rooted in trust, clarity, and disciplined inquiry while encouraging them to grow as scholars and professionals.

“She does not ask for answers; she asks for reasoning, for connections, for implications,” one student wrote in their nomination. Another student shared that Dr. Snyder’s teaching encouraged them to “develop our own scholarly voice” through independent thinking and meaningful academic exploration. Students also highlighted Dr. Snyder’s inclusive and culturally sustaining approach to education. One international student reflected that rather than feeling pressured to conform to a single academic perspective, they were encouraged to bring their own cultural lens into classroom discussions and analysis.

Teaching excellence, students noted, extends beyond helping students understand concepts—it inspires them to think differently and engage more deeply with the world around them. Nominators described Dr. Snyder as having “an extraordinary gift for igniting curiosity and encouraging comprehensive academic exploration,” while challenging students to move beyond surface-level understanding and engage thoughtfully with complex ideas.

Her mentorship also extends beyond academics. One doctoral student shared that, as a new mother balancing family life and coursework, Dr. Snyder’s encouragement helped her continue pursuing her intellectual and professional goals. “She consistently reminds students that their scholarly growth is possible alongside life’s challenges,” the student wrote.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Dr. Snyder is recognized across the University for her leadership in conversations surrounding artificial intelligence in education. Faculty, staff, and students praised her willingness to help others understand both the opportunities and ethical considerations associated with AI in teaching and learning. Her colleagues describe her as a valued voice in campus-wide discussions about AI policies and responsible implementation.

Students and colleagues alike noted that Dr. Snyder’s mentorship, ethical leadership, and “vibrant intellectual energy” enrich the Notre Dame community and reflect the University’s mission of educating leaders to transform the world.

The Mullan Distinguished Teacher Award recognizes excellence in teaching and significant contributions to Notre Dame and the broader community. Presented annually at Commencement since 1976, the University selects one faculty member based on nominations from Notre Dame administrators, faculty, and students.
