The Senior Thesis Exhibition showcases the work of six seniors from art and art therapy.

The exhibition features the work of Kamia Agnew, Prabina Ale Magar, Hope Brown, Grace Cross, Casey Nutter, and Keiyonna Owens.

Artworks include oil paintings, digital photographs, works on paper, and mixed media pieces. The students are working with concepts, such as abstraction with light, material experimentation, food texture through paint, lighting and setting in portrait photography, and emotional expression.

School of Pharmacy Increases Diabetes Education Access Through State Grants


BALTIMORE – The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has increased across the globe in recent years, and Maryland has not been immune to the trend.

Recent research by the state’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System estimates that over 10 percent of Maryland adults have diabetes, and an additional 30-plus percent are diagnosed with prediabetes. With a mortality rate of 20.5 per 100,000 in 2019, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Maryland.

Eight Notre Dame of Maryland University nursing students, along with dean and associate professor Dr. Kathleen Wisser and assistant professor Jennifer Mitchell, had the opportunity to meet with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan at the State House in Annapolis on Friday, April 1.

The students, who are enrolled in a Community Health Nursing course taught by Professor Mitchell this semester, thanked Governor Hogan for supporting the nursing profession by implementing legislation that leads to positive outcomes and addresses the nursing shortage. They also shared some of their first-hand experiences and challenges during their clinical and practicum rotations as well as solutions to address these challenges.

School of Pharmacy Increases Diabetes Education Access Through State Grants

Over 40 percent of Maryland adults are estimated to have either prediabetes or diabetes, which is the sixth leading cause of death in the state.

Reducing those numbers is a priority for the state, and NDMU's School of Pharmacy has emerged as a leader in that effort after being awarded a pair of grants to implement Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) Umbrella Hubs across the region.

Bonner Leaders Participate in Welcome Home Project to Support Syrian Refugees

Members of NDMU's Bonner Leaders Program and the Office of Mission and Ministry gathered in Baltimore last week to help furnish a home for incoming Syrian refugees. They volunteered through the Welcome Home Project, an initiative organized by Maryland's Office for Refugees and Asylees and the International Rescue Committee.

With only 48 hours' notice, NDMU community members contributed a substantial amount of household items, toiletries and gift cards to aid the family’s transition.

Six members of NDMU's Morrissy Honors Program traveled to Philadelphia last weekend to present research at the Northeast Regional Honors Council Conference. Current students Zohra Ahmed, Arianna Clark, Laura Forcha, Alycia Hancock, Kristina Pickering and Janelle Sangalang were accompanied by Dr. Evelyn Spratt, director of the honors program, and Morrissy alumnae Jessie Willinghan '20.

NDMU Offers Full-tuition Scholarships for Afghan Refugees

Beginning this fall, NDMU will provide two full-tuition scholarships for refugees from Afghanistan to earn a bachelor's degree in the Undergraduate Studies. The scholarships, created in partnership with the Rotary Action Group for Refugees, Forced Displacement, and Migration, cover full tuition and on-campus housing for up to four years for a pair of undergraduate students.

NDMU PhD Student Selected as Maryland’s Assistant Principal of the Year

Kimberly Culbertson D'22 was recently named Assistant Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals. Culbertson, who is working towards her doctorate in Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations at NDMU, has worked for Baltimore County Public Schools since 2006 and is currently an assistant principal at Towson High School.

NDMU Grad Receives National Speech-Language Pathology Award

Dionna Latimer-Hearn D'19 was recently selected as the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing’s inaugural Clinician of the Year. Dr. Latimer-Hearn has worked across the globe as a multilingual speech-language pathologist and educational consultant. She is also co-founder and director of REACTinitiative, a Christian nonprofit organization that promotes equity in education for historically marginalized populations.

Four NDMU students had the opportunity to meet with School Sisters of Notre Dame leaders visiting from Rome last Friday. Sister Julie Lattner, SSND General Council, and Sister Margaret Malone, Provincial Councilor, learned about campus life and shared a few of their experiences while living abroad.

Dr. Angelo Letizia, assistant professor in the School of Education, recently published his second book of poetry, "Pilgrims of Infinity," through Silver Bow Press.

Dr. Stephanie Savick, associate professor in the School of Education, presented "Creating Inclusive Classrooms" at the Educators' Rising Conference on March 16, 2022. Her presentation was attended by aspiring educators in grades 9-12 from Baltimore County Public Schools.

Dr. Stephanie Savick was also a guest speaker in the Foundations of Leadership course at Maryvale Preparatory High School on March 14. 2022. Her presentation was attended by juniors and seniors participating in the Leadership Institute and Certificate Program.

School of Nursing

The Center for Caring with Technology in the School of Nursing hosted 34 interested juniors from Glen Burnie High School on campus last month. The students experienced a simulation of a mock code utilizing high fidelity manikins, had hands on experiences with performing vital signs and assessments, and participated in a panel discussion with six NDMU students titled “What is the lived experience of being a nursing student during a pandemic.”

Documentary Screening: I Am Evidence

Shown as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I Am Evidence tells the story of four survivors whose rape kits went untested for years, following them as they navigate their way through the criminal justice system and learn that so often, the system is broken. The film has won the audience award for Best Documentary Film at both the Provincetown and Traverse City Film Festivals.
