Four Memorable Receptions Highlight Alumnae and Alumnae Weekend 2023

Alumnae and Alumni Weekend 2023 included four memorable receptions across campus. Damozel celebrated its 100 year anniversary, NDMU's Morrissy Honors Program featured an exhibit on the life of Dr. Elizabeth Morrissy, the School of Pharmacy recognized the 10 year anniversary of its inaugural graduating class, and the Athletics Department held a reception which included NDMU's women's basketball team receiving its 2023 CSAC Championship rings!

Sister Grace Okon Featured in AMSSND Article

Sister Grace Okon has made the most of her three years at Notre Dame. While working first towards a master’s, and now a doctoral degree from the School of Education, Sister Grace has served as an assistant for the SOE, volunteered in the Registar’s office, and worked as an academic advisor for other NDMU students.

Sister Grace first joined the School Sisters of Notre Dame as a member of the second group of African postulants back in 1990. Her 30+ years of service to the SSNDs, and her path to Notre Dame, was featured in an article written by NDMU President Emerita Sister Kathleen Feeley in last week's School Sisters of Notre Dame Atlantic-Midwest Province newsletter.

NDMU Academic Advisor Presents at National Conference

Sarah Levin, adult academic advisor in the School of Arts, Sciences, and Business, presented recently at the Global Community for Academic Advising's Annual Conference, which was held in Orlando, Florida, from October 4-7. Her presentation examined how students with accessibility challenges are often left out of discussions of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and she discussed best practices which could be implemented at NDMU. Any University constituents who would like to discuss potential implementation strategies are welcome to reach out to Sarah at slevin@ndm.edu.

School of Arts, Sciences and Business

On Saturday, September 23, the English Department hosted the 100th anniversary celebration of Damozel, Notre Dame’s literary magazine.   

Six alumnae read from their original publications in Damozel: Pat Montley ‘65, Joy Moody ‘74, Mia Scharper ‘91, Kelly McMillen ‘96, Sierra Farrare ‘18, and current Alumna Editor Micah Castelo ‘18.  The Loyola/Notre Dame Library provided archival documents, including early editions of Damozel and a slideshow of Damozel art over the century.  SAGE provided high tea for the many alumnae in attendance.   

The ceremony was co-sponsored by the Sister Maura Eichner Endowed Chair of English and the Office of Alumnae and Alumni Engagement.

Dr. Rachel Burk, associate professor of Spanish, spent last year in Spain while on sabbatical - she and her family moved to Seville in September 2022. While there, Dr. Burk (pictured above at the Roman amphitheater in Mérida) dove into the extraordinary archives of her new city in support of her research project, Con sangre entra: Blood and Purity in Early Modern Spain.

Morrissy Honors Program

Morrissy Honors alumnae and current students gathered during Alumnae and Alumni Weekend to examine an archival exhibit on the life of Dr. Elizabeth Morrissy curated by Dr. Evelyn Spratt, Director of the Morrissy Honors Program. The exhibit focused on Dr. Morrissy’s life as a professor at Notre Dame, and as an activist promoting social justice for women and the underserved during the 20th century. Part of the exhibit included artifacts from the honors program when it began in 1981 – 1982.

School of Education

The School of Education hosted a Beyond Borders Virtual Tour of Haiti on October 2, highlighting an area of concern of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Over 40 students and faculty from the School of Education, the School of Nursing, and the Morrissy Honors Program took part in the virtual tour via Zoom. 

Through the attendance of those participants, a matching gift from the Vista Hermosa Foundation raised over $4,000 to help purchase water catchment systems for families living in extreme poverty on the Haitian island of La Gonâve. The funds will allow for the purchase of 13 water catchment systems to help sustain families, animals, and crops on the island. The School of Education would like to thank everyone for helping to spread the word about the wonderful work of the SSNDs and Beyond Borders which continues in Haiti.

Call for Panel Speakers for Library Series on AI

The library is also planning a series of panels called “Artificial Intelligence at Work” meant to bring together faculty and students from both Notre Dame and Loyola to begin discussions about the effects artificial intelligence already having or is expected to have on academic disciplines and the careers students will be entering after graduation. We are currently putting out a call for faculty who may be interested in speaking on one of these panels. When possible we are hoping to match faculty members from similar academic areas at Notre Dame and Loyola together on panels. The panels will most likely take place in the Spring 2024 semester, though they may begin late in the Fall semester depending on faculty interest and availability.
